Search marketing is now widely recognised as a highly effective way of reaching customers online. Last year, over ?2 Billion was spent globally in online marketing and the figures are set to soar. More companies with an online presence are turning to search marketing to reach prospective customers, generate traffic to their site and convert them into sales. So, how does it all work? If you?re considering investing a percentage of your hard earned marketing budget on search marketing you should have a basic understanding of where it?s going and how it works. Most search marketing companies talk about improved web site and page ranking but what exactly does that mean? What you want is to increase traffic to your site, improve sales and raise the brand. How does that happen?

SEM or SM?

Search marketing which has now dropped the less glamorous ?engine? from its previous industry name of Search Engine Marketing really consists of two disciplines ? paid search and organic or natural search. Paid search is of course what keeps Google in hyper-growth or more specifically Google Adwords. In the UK we must not forget Yahoo Search Marketing (Overture), Miva and Mirago. These engines all enable advertisers to Pay-for-Position (PfP) or Pay-per-Click (PPC). It?s important to note that such marketing is a form of advertising and such adverts wherever they appear should be announced as ?sponsored? or labelled as advertising.

Paid Search

The PfP networks mentioned above are referred to as networks because, in nearly all cases, their adverts are shown across a network of sites. The sites in the network depend on the relationship that the main ad technology provider has with search portals. For example, if you search for something on Google and look at the Google Adwords shown, you will see the same ads on Aol.co.uk. You may see some differences due to advertisers? budgets causing fluctuations in impressions, but they are same.

Organic Search?

Organic search or natural search results are provided by crawling search engines ? more on those later. The important thing to remember is that paid search is advertising and organic search is editorial. Well, that?s the analogy the search marketing industry uses to describe in Newspaper-like terminology the complex world of search. It?s a rather good analogy because it allows us search people to explain Search Engine Optimisation.

Organic Search and PR

So if you wanted to advertise in a national newspaper you could book it directly, use a media buyer, engage a creative agency and possibly a media planner. Well you can do all of that too with paid search. The management of paid search is big business. But what about editorial or those crawled results? Well to influence editorial, you might engage a PR agency. Of course a PR agency?s not going to guarantee front page news but it will devise a strategy and execute on it to get results. Well in the world of search, to try and influence crawling search engines and their organic results, you should consider Search Engine Optimisation and you might consider a Search Engine Optimisation agency. Another point for clarity, Search Engine Optimisation is a really bad term. You don?t and can?t optimise search engines you actually optimise the website you want to perform well in search engines. Unfortunately, we?re stuck with SEO and not a more logical name like ?website search optimisation?.

The find, crawl, read, index and rank

At ivantage.co.uk we always think of ?ranking? on crawling search engines as just one of four steps in generating traffic and conversions in the process of successful Search Engine Optimisation. Your site, like every other site, needs not only to be ranked by search engines but found, crawled, read, indexed and then ranked by crawling search engines.

Notice I talk about crawling search engines. What on earth are these? Actually you?ll have heard of most of them, there really aren?t that many and certainly the only ones you need to worry about, as far as traffic is concerned, are Google, Yahoo, MSN, (Ask Jeeves) Teoma and Mirago. Each search engine generally has a portal component which is the bit consumers visit to conduct their searches and a crawling component called the robot or spider. So each of the search engines I mentioned above has its own robot, each uniquely named Googlebot, Slurp, MSNbot, Teoma and Henry respectively.

So how does your site get found?

Well, robots work by following links. So getting a link from an established site to your site is vital. You can also see if search engines know about your site already by using the command site:www.yoursite.co.uk in the search box at Google for example. This asks the search engine to retrieve all the pages it has in its database (or index) from your domain. This allows you to see which pages the search engines know about. If you are not listed you need to establish links ? ask friends, colleagues and business associates and submit your site at DMOZ and the Yahoo directories (note this is different to the Yahoo search engine) . You can also submit your site for crawling at most search engines, but be aware; submitting for crawling is not as good and being found for crawling!

So, how about being crawled, read and indexed?

Well, again the command site:www.mysite.co.uk on Google and on other search engines can really serve you well. Have a look at what text the search engines are indexing and the see if the links work. This can tell you a lot about how well read and understood your site is. One of the most important things you can do to improve your search engine readability is to use a unique, descriptive HTML Title on every page of your website. Also use a Description and Abstract Meta Tag (information inserted into the ?head? area of your web pages) and remember that Title and Meta tags have two purposes. The first purpose is to compel users to click through from a search page to your website. Such Titles and Meta Tags are often displayed to users using search engines and so using promotional text such as ?Free Delivery? or real unique selling points entice users to click through. The second purpose is ranking ? so use keywords in the Title and Meta tags that have potential to generate the right kind of traffic to your site, but match the content of each page.

So what?s the key to good ranking?

The key to ranking is a great site with great content and an enviable back linking structure that has been established organically because other site owners have felt it important and useful to link to your site. Search engines really look for sites that are part of a thematic community and sites that rank the best are those that demonstrate authority over their subject matter with important, fresh, content, referenced by other websites active in the same community.

Making the Mamarazzi - A Photography Book | this heart of mine

Calling all momma photogs, mamarazzis and wannabes! Have I got a book for you.

?Making the Mamarazzi? is a new book by family and child photographer, Michelle Sauer of Michelle Sauer Photography. I met Michelle through an Early Childhood and Family Education class when Bug and her youngest were two. Since then, I see her photos, her gorgeous photos, float across different social media feeds. I love her work and am impressed by her tremendous gift.

Michelle is a wife and stay-at-home, homeschooling mother of three sweet children, two girls and a boy. She started her photography journey four years ago when she wanted to be able to take beautiful photos of her quickly growing brood. I was given the opportunity to read Michelle?s book and I think it?s a fabulous manual for mamarazzis-in-the-making or anyone wanting to take beautiful photos. Michelle has a deep knowledge of the technical side of photography and imparts this knowledge through easy-to-understand instruction and helpful diagrams. I?ve been using my camera in full manual mode for over a year now. It really is fun once you get the hang of it and it changes the photos you take dramatically. I enjoyed the technical refresher plus I learned a bunch of little photo tweaks I am looking forward to messing with in the coming weeks.

Nexus 7 travel covers to be available outside the US within 2 weeks?

The whole Nexus 7 purchasing process has been a mixed bag for many people, but outside of the US one thing in particular is still lacking. The official OEM cover isn't yet even an option to pre-order in countries such as the UK and Australia. And, that's discounting any potential forthcoming colorful ones. It's frustrating to say the least, there are third party options out there, but for many OEM accessories are the only way. 

The guys down under at Ausdroid are as frustrated as everyone else, and they've been badgering Asus Australia for some information. The response -- via Twitter, it should be noted -- was such:

We should remember that messages via local social media accounts are far from the most reliable source of information. Needless to say, it doesn't sound unreasonable either. Enterprise Ping (for Android)

Enterprise Ping is a 99-cent Android app available from Google Play. The app is developed by Enterprising Apps, the same company that developed Wolf WiFi Pro (for Android). Enterprise Ping is a graphical ping tool. Ping is simple, yet it's one of the most effective network utilities for troubleshooting connection and latency issues. Instead of using the boring old command line to execute the ping command, Enterprise ping provides visualization for pinging as well as graphing and logging functions.

The Good
With Enterprise Ping, you can ping two IP addresses or URLs at once. These IP addresses and URLs can be saved so that you can quickly initiate a ping when opening the app. You can switch back and forth between the two pings' screens to see detailed individual information on each ping such as percent of packet loss. However, both pings are displayed as two different lines in a graph on each screen, so you can constantly compare the two.

Ping displays statistics such as response time per ping and total response time since the ping request was sent, as well as maximum, minimum, and average ping response time. The app also shows number of packets sent, received, and lost.

The real-time graphing is sharply detailed and easy-to-read, even on an Android phone. You can quickly pull up a log file of the ping activity and export it as a .txt file to an SD card.

From within the app, a user can enable or disable wakelock, the mechanism for placing the Android device in a power-saving mode. Users can also enable or disable Wi-Fi from inside Enterprise Ping.

The Not-So-Good
Enterprise Ping is limited in functionality, even more limited than some of the free Ping apps available. You can only customize the packet size; you can't tweak other ping parameters like TTL or interval time between pings or any other settings.

I also noticed that pulling up the ping log overlaps the ping graphing so the log details are a bit hard to see.

Needs More Features
Enterprise Ping, if it's padded with more features, will probably evolve into an app that's worth more than a buck. You can do multiple pings, which you can't do in many ping apps; the graphing is slick, and exporting information is a breeze. It needs at least as many features as I mentioned earlier that some of the free ping apps offer.

Still, Enterprise Ping gets three stars for the multiple ping ability, the beautiful graphing,? and the easy report exporting. Hopefully, more capability will be added in the near future.

Camping is one of the funnest outdoor adventures that you can experience in life. It is one of the funnest things that life has to offer you, that is why you are going to want to make sure you get the most out of camping. You can do that by reading this article here.

Try to get to the campsite well before nightfall. This allows you to get a feel for the lay of the land and gives you the opportunity to set up camp while you can still see what you are doing. In addition, it lets your children feel a little more comfortable with their surroundings because they will have time to explore.

Do your research on the area you are camping in. If camping at a campground, you are going to want to know where the designated bathrooms and running water is. You should also get to know where the trails, beaches and other activities you will enjoy are for the best experience.

Save any cardboard boxes and paper bags in the weeks leading up to your camping trip. You can use some of the the boxes to carry supplies, of course, but they are also great for starting fires. Laundry lint from your dryer screen also makes great kindling for a fire.

If you have more than three people camping with you, take along more than one tent. You are going to want to have some privacy at one time or another. The additional tent will make it possible to get some "me" time while at the camp site. It also gives you additional storage to keep animals out of your supplies.

Do not approach any wild animals while you are camping. Something that may appear harmless and adorable could be incredibly territorial. Also be sure not to feed any animals, as doing so may lead to injuries. Avoid keeping any food inside of your tent to prevent animals from destroying your campsite. Keep it stored away safely or in a nearby tree.

When camping, never burn your trash or plastic containers in your campfire. These materials can emit toxic fumes that noxious fumes that not only form lots of smoke, but can contaminate food that is prepared over the fire. Instead, keep a trash bag handy, and dispose of it before going in for the night to keep animals from looking for treats!

If you are traveling with children, give them the opportunity to assist you when you get to the campground. They can carry gear, support you as you set up the tent and look for firewood. Not only will it keep them busy and out of trouble, it will be fun for them as well.

Before you leave on your trip, use your backyard to help you work out the kinks in your camping equipment. Put up your tent to make sure you know (or remember!) how to put it up. This will also allow you to see if anything needs to be patched up. It will make it that much easier for you when you get to the campsite.

One thing that many people forget to pack on a camping trip, and which quickly turns the trip into a nightmare is bug spray. This simple repellent will save you both annoyance and can protect your health as many types of bugs can do a great deal of damage to you quickly.

Turkish journalist charged with threatening judges

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - A Turkish journalist facing trial for an alleged plot to overthrow the government was on Tuesday also charged with being a member of a "terrorist organization" and threatening and defaming the judiciary, the DHA news agency said.

It said an Istanbul court accepted an indictment from prosecutors seeking a seven-year prison term for the new charges against Ahmet Sik, who was released in March after more than a year awaiting trial in the "Ergenekon" case, which involves a web of alleged plots against Turkey's government.

The prosecution of journalists and others as well as the detention of hundreds of people including senior military officers, has drawn criticism from Turkish civil society groups, as well as the United States and European Union.

Supporters of the governing AK Party, which has Islamist roots and faced hostility after coming to power in 2002 from an army that sees itself as the guardian of Turkey's secular foundations, call the Ergenekon trials a step towards rule of law.

But its critics say the trials aim in part to end the influence of the military as a rival for power, and silence dissent against Turkey's longest-standing government in decades.

The court in the Istanbul district of Silivri declined comment on Tuesday's indictment. Media reports said it included comments Sik, an award-winning journalist, made after his release from jail in March. The earlier charges against him are still pending.

Sik had after his release criticized the judiciary for being politically motivated and accused judges and prosecutors of inventing conspiracies.

The new charges accuse Sik of "being a member of an armed terrorist organization," as his actions seek to make use of the intimidating powers of criminal organizations, media quoted the new indictment as saying.

The indictment lists 39 judges and prosecutors overseeing the Ergenekon case as "victims."

Sik is now set to appear in court on September 13 on the new charges, one day before he appears in court for the ongoing Ergenekon trial.
