Landing On an a Asteroid Might Cause an Avalanche

Maybe we already have the materials, but the convention is to stick (ha) with what works.

We don't, though. In order to make the ship significantly stronger we have to spend more mass. Carbon fiber might one day be the right material, but right now it's still prone to cracking in many terrestrial applications.

Perhaps also a little static generator could polarize dust so it is more attracted to the asteroid than a craft.

That's a good or even great idea, but it won't help with rocks for the foreseeable future.

Labour loses election head after row over unions' role

By Peter Griffiths

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Labour Party leader suffered a setback in his fight to replace David Cameron as prime minister on Thursday when his election coordinator quit after a row over whether unions manipulated its selection of candidates.

Less than two years before voters go to the polls, Tom Watson stepped down, saying in a letter to Ed Miliband that it was "better for you and the future unity of the party that I go now".

His departure is a blow for Miliband, who narrowly beat his older brother David in a Labour leadership contest in 2010 with the crucial support of the trade unions, one of the party's biggest sources of funding.

Since then, Labour have led Cameron's Conservatives in the polls at a time of economic slump, but Miliband's personal ratings have been weaker than the prime minister's or those of Tony Blair, who won three elections for Labour.

Watson's departure follows days of bad headlines for Labour over claims that Unite, Britain's biggest union, tried to hijack the process to choose a Labour candidate to contest a parliamentary seat in the Scottish town of Falkirk at the 2015 election. The union's preferred candidate was Watson's office manager. Unite said it operated within Labour's rules.

Cameron seized on the episode as evidence of Miliband's weakness at the hands of powerful unions trying to push Labour back to the left after a shift to the centre under Blair.

In his resignation letter, Watson said he hoped Labour would publish its internal report into the Falkirk affair to allay "spurious suppositions" in the public domain.

"I am proud of your Buddha-like qualities of patience, deep thought, compassion and resolve," Watson wrote to Miliband. "I just don't think you need me in the Shadow Cabinet."

Miliband said Watson's resignation made "sense for you and for the party".

Watson, 46, has been a member of parliament since 2001. He is known for his fierce criticism of Rupert Murdoch and his campaigning during the phone-hacking scandal which embroiled the media mogul's British newspaper business.

They may have left the country last month, but Brand Beckham is continuing to make waves in China.

Victoria Beckham unveiled her cover of the August edition of Vogue China magazine on her Twitter page on Friday.

Meanwhile, David attended promotional events at H&M and Adidas, as well as enjoying a kickaround with young footballers.

Meanwhile, Victoria has been praised for her business sense by her fashion designer friend Roland Mouret, who guided her when she first launched her Victoria Beckham collection in 2008.

He told the Evening Standard: 'She is not a designer like me, but she has something I don't have: that unique sense of wearing what she is doing, and that picture will go around the world and sell it.

'She is the most photographed woman, so why should she be photographed in other people's clothes if she can be photographed in her own?

'I gave her some advice, some names, some people, and allowed her to call me whenever she wanted.

'She had an amazing potential that certain women have - like Diane von Furstenberg or Estee Lauder. Some women are businesswomen by the fact that people love and hate them at the same time.'

College Prep: Summer Sangria

One of my favorite things about being back in Florida is having full access to a real?kitchen. Seriously, there's only so much you can do when your kitchen is nothing more than a hallway.

Or... maybe I just need to actually bite the bullet and stock up on cooking supplies. But, I wonder, where would I have room for... I don't know... a cutting board, or a pitcher, or a real mixer. Because my little cabinets are just not going to cut it. And I'd much rather have a dishwasher than another set of cabinets.

But I digress.

I like sangria, but it's not my most favorite drink in the world. However, with our?refrigerator?completely stocked with fresh fruit, it seemed like a no brainer. Oh, and it was so wonderful.

(And easy to make!)

I used the fruit we already had: strawberries, blueberries,?cantaloupe, and honeydew melon.

Combine six cups of fresh fruit?with a quarter cup of fresh ginger?and one cup of fresh basil?in a pitcher. Pour half of a cup of orange?liquor?into the pitcher and gently mash the fruits and basil while you stir. Pour one bottle of crisp white wine?and three tablespoons of fresh lemon juice?and stir.

Place a few ice cubes?in a mason jar, top with sangria, and serve.

It was really a sweet little drink!

For dinner, we had blackened fish (a family favorite), baked corn (I ate half of the dish before dinner even started), and pesto pasta (so refreshing!).

What did you eat and drink for the Fourth? Do you have a favorite summer drink recipe? Please share!

xoxo

PS This was perfect for the hot and humid day!

California fireworks accident hurts dozens, probe under way

LOS ANGELES | Fri Jul 5, 2013 3:57pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A major accident at an Independence Day fireworks show in Simi Valley, California, left dozens of spectators injured, police said on Friday, as suspicion fell on a collapsed launching platform as the cause.

"What we understand is potentially one of the launching stations fell over, resulting in ignited fireworks going into the crowd," Simi Valley police spokesman Sergeant Tom Meyer said.

There was no sign of foul play, Simi Valley police said in a statement.

Initially, police said 28 people suffered shrapnel wounds and other types of injuries in the resulting chaos; four of them were seriously hurt.

But calls to local hospitals revealed at least 35 people were hurt.

Shortly after the start late Thursday of the Simi Valley Rotary Club fireworks show about 30 miles west of Los Angeles, fireworks landed in a crowd of 8,000 to 10,000 onlookers gathered on a soccer field, police said.

Officers in a helicopter took aerial photos of the scene of the incident on Friday to get a better sense of what went wrong, said Meyer.

The California Occupational Safety and Health Administration will be involved in the investigation, and Bay Fireworks of Bethpage, New York, which mounted the fireworks show, is cooperating with the probe, police said.

Simi Valley Hospital received 26 patients, said hospital spokeswoman Alicia Gonzalez. Those victims ranged in age from 17 months to 71 years old, with a dozen children among the injured, she said.

Injuries ranged from burns and shrapnel wounds to chest pains to trauma from being trampled by the crowd, Gonzalez said. Two people were at Simi Valley Hospital in fair condition on Friday, one person was transferred to an area hospital specializing in burns and the rest were released, she said.

A representative for Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center in Thousand Oaks said seven people injured in the incident were treated and released at the facility, and a spokeswoman for Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Los Angeles said the hospital treated and released another two people.

Los Angeles station KABC-TV showed images of black fireworks debris spread all across the field where the show was staged.

This was the second year the local Rotary Club used Bay Fireworks for the fireworks show, police said.

Bay Fireworks said in a statement it "will conduct a thorough and complete investigation of this incident and make our findings available to the public."

In Seattle, illegal fireworks ignited a fire at a dryland boat storage facility on Lake Union, scorching 14 vessels and causing an estimated $1.4 million in damage, said Seattle Fire Department spokesman Kyle Moore.

The fireworks that caused the blaze appeared to have been set off from a recreational trail above the facility, he said. An investigation was under way, and authorities had not made any arrests in the incident.
