SYDNEY (Reuters) ? President?s Cup skippers Greg Norman and Fred Couples will face-off as players the week before the team event after organizers confirmed they will both be in the field for this year?s Australian Open.

The biennial contest between the United States and the rest of the world barring Europe returns this November to the Royal Melbourne, the site of the international team?s sole victory in 1998.

American Couples has already indicated that he wants his 12-man team to be playing the week before the November 14-20 showdown and is leading the way by signing up for the Australian Open at the Lakes club in Sydney.

Norman, who like Couples will be a non-playing captain, will warm up by having a crack at winning his home open for a sixth time alongside defending champion and compatriot Geoff Ogilvy, the 2006 U.S. Open champion.

American top 20 players Bubba Watson and Dustin Watson will also be in the field, having all but clinched two of the 10 automatic places in the U.S. team.

It remains uncertain whether Tiger Woods, who is 20th in the President?s Cup rankings and is likely to require one of two captain?s picks to make the team, will play in Sydney.

Despite having promised Woods a berth on the team last December, Couples said he would like the former number one to be playing the week before.

?If I pick two people and the other guy is there, he should be there (too),? the 51-year-old told the event?s website(www.pgatour.com/tournaments/presidentscup/).

Wood?s last tournament victory came at the Australian Masters in November 2009 and, struggling with injury, he recently fell out of the world top 10.

Couples said he was confident Woods would let him know if he was not up to playing.

?Well, there?s one thing about Tiger, and I say this because I text him all the time? if he?s not ready to play, he?ll be the one to tell me: ?Don?t waste your pick on me?,? he added.

?He will tell you he?s struggled and now he?s injured a little bit, so I don?t even know how much he?ll play, but he doesn?t have to prove a lot to any captain, I don?t think.

?You know, I?m no different than anybody; if I tell you today that if he just plays fairly well, I?m going to pick him, I can?t imagine that?s the dumbest thing anyone has ever said.

?And if I sit here and say, if he continues to play like he is, in my mind he will be the guy to say: ?No reason to take me over there.? He?s not a difficult guy at all.?
