The last few months of my life have been pretty stressful to say the least. Between work and study there hasn?t been time left for much else. When I?m feeling stressed and rundown I know what I should do ? eat healthy, get rest and exercise.? What I actually do is feast on sugar and bread, drink wine and lay around watching lame TV shows till crazy hours of the night. There?s only so much of that my body can take. When I looked in the mirror the person looking back at me looked tired, pale and unhappy. I was pretty sure I was going to be 30 going on 40 if I didn?t make a change.
My body screamed ?DETOX? but my mind was all like ?I ain?t doing one of those crazy juice diets?. When I mentioned detoxing to my friends the common response was ?but you?re vegan ? don?t you eat healthy all the time?? Ah no ? being vegan doesn?t necessarily mean being healthy ? just ask the hundreds of vegan chocolate chip cookies I consumed over the past few months (I?m not joking). I think I was in the pantry stuffing my face with cookies the day Cookie Monster announced ?cookies are a sometimes food?.
And then I stumbled across Emily?s 30 day Detox Feast e-book.
Over four weeks the program gradually eliminates sugar, wheat and finally dairy while at the same time encourages you to increase fresh fruit and vegetable intake, exercise and actually listen to your body. Unlike most ?detoxes? this one doesn?t involve depriving yourself of solids or starving yourself ? thank God because I LOVE food. Emily gives you some guidelines to follow and includes heaps of suggested (vegan) recipes.
The initial three day coffee comedown was a total?biatch but after that I began to feel good and found it exceptionally easy to follow the program. By week four I was energetic, my skin was clearer and I?d lost a little weight (unintended because I really pigged out on all the delicious detoxing food). Most of all I felt a sense of achievement ? I was really proud of myself and that in itself made me smile brightly.
I finished the detox two weeks ago and yet have continued to follow Emily?s detoxing guidelines -?a testimony to the simplicity and deliciousness of the program.
To prove not all detoxes need to involve a juicer and the eradication of knife, fork and spoon, I kept a picture journal of some of the food I consumed over the four weeks. All the food is vegan, sugar free, wheat free and, did I mention,?friggen delicious.

I think from now on when I tell someone I?m vegan and they ask ?but what do you eat?? I?m just gonna point them to this post and say no more.
