Letter: Softball fields a great addition to Toms River | Toms River News

Site work on has begun on the Girl?s Softball Complex and Park on North Bay Avenue.? The 26 acre complex is located centrally in the Township at the site of the former Epstein and Frankenburg poultry farms.? This will give our girls softball programs a permanent site in Toms River.? Currently the girls softball teams play their games on various school fields throughout the Township.? The Complex and Park will include 4 regulation softball fields with dugouts and tournament quality lights, a small ?T? ball field for the younger girls, a tot lot playground with baseball themed equipment, a clubhouse with refreshment stand and storage facility, a centrally located gazebo and a fitness/walking trail encircling the entire site.? The Township has received a $750,000 Green Acres Grant from the State toward construction of the facility with the balance of funds coming from our open space tax fund.? Sod should be placed on the fields this fall and they should be ready for the start of the 2012 season.

Toms River enjoys a rich tradition in athletics and recreation.? The Township has continued to address the recreational needs of our community based on recommendations from our Township?s Recreation Committee which is composed of residents from all of the major sports and recreational groups.? Over the past several years the Township has built a state of the art indoor ice rink at Winding River to allow year round skating and ice hockey.? Sport turf fields were built in partnership with the school district at our 3 high schools and 3 elementary schools to address the needs of our Pop Warner and Lacrosse programs.? In addition the Township has made improvements to our softball fields around Town to include new modern backstops and infields along with improved lighting.? On the Barrier Island the facilities at Bayfront Park were enhanced along with construction of the new Block House Lifeguard Facility at the Southern end of Ortley Beach.? Construction on the new Lord House Lifeguard Facility at the Northern end of Ortley Beach is scheduled for the 2012 summer season.? The Township has constructed 3 children?s playgrounds at Castle Park, the Riverwood Rodeo and Silverton?s Skippers Cove to meet the needs of our younger families.

The Girl?s Softball Complex and Park will be another great addition to the recreational facilities available to our residents which makes our Town one of the best communities in New Jersey to call HOME.
