Experian Automotive: Consumer credit scores for auto loans drop to ...

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. ??Experian Automotive today announced that average credit scores for consumers buying a vehicle have dropped to near prerecession levels. According to its quarterly automotive credit analysis, the average credit score for financing a new vehicle dropped six points to 760 and dropped four points to 659 for used vehicles. Comparatively, credit scores in Q1 of 2008 were at an average of 753 for new vehicles and 653 for used.

Lenders also continued to set favorable terms for consumers during Q1 2012. Interest rates were lower year-over-year and loan terms were longer, giving consumers access to potentially lower monthly payments. For example, the average interest rates dropped to 4.56 percent on new vehicle loans and to 9.02 percent for used. The average loan terms also increased, extending by one month for new and used vehicles to a total of 64 and 59 months, respectively.

?During the first quarter of 2012, car shoppers definitely found more favorable conditions for their vehicle loans,? said Melinda Zabritski, director of automotive credit for Experian. ?A reduction in average credit scores, lower interest rates and a lengthening of loan terms are all very good signs for the market and offer great opportunities for consumers looking to make a deal on a new or used vehicle.?

The analysis also showed an increase in the average amount financed. The average amount financed on new vehicles rose by $589 in Q1 2012, reaching a total of $25,995. For used vehicles, the average amount financed increased by $411, bringing the average total to $17,050.

?Our report shows automotive lending is as healthy as it?s been since the market bottomed out in 2008,? continued Zabritski. ?With consumers doing a good job of paying back loans on time and the percentage of dollars at risk reaching its lowest point in six years, lenders are able to extend terms and provide lower rates. This thawing of the credit pipeline has been good for everyone, from consumers to lenders to automotive retailers.?

Some additional highlights from Q1 2012:

  • Vehicle loans to nonprime, subprime and deep-subprime customers increased by 11.4 percent
  • Auto repossession rates are down by 37.1 percent.
  • Thirty-day delinquencies dropped by 7.6 percent; 60-day delinquencies dropped by 12.1 percent.
  • Banks and credit unions gained market share. Banks grew by 7.5 percent to 40.21 percent market share, while credit unions grew by 10.5 percent to 16.89 percent market share.

Complete findings from the State of the Automotive Finance Market Q1 2012 credit trends analysis will be presented today in a Webinar at 11 a.m. Pacific/1 p.m. Central/2 p.m. Eastern. If you would like to attend the event, visit http://www.experian.com.

Which tablet platform to pick for your App iOS, Android, Windows or HTML5?

John Koetsier shares an interesting post on picking the tablet platform for the app that you develop.

John Koetsier shows the various choices of platforms available for the developers to develop an App that includes iOS , Android , Kindle Fire , Windows 8 , BlackBerry and HTML5

Below is my short opinion on the picking the platform for development.

Apple?s iOS is the leader in tablet sales and android being the leader in smartphone sales. With the Windows 8 to be launched officially later this year, it sounds like there are plenty of opportunities for the developers to develop or even port their app to different or almost all the popular platforms.

Almost all the platforms above support HTML5 with different levels of support. Check HTML5test.com to know more about how well does the browser support HTML5?

HTML5 may be a good option for the developer to look out for developing and porting the app easily across multiple platforms.

Some HTML5/JavaScript based libraries could also be looked at like

  • Phone Gap
  • Sencha Touch
  • JQuery Mobile
  • And more?

There is certainly an advantage on the Native development on these platforms and going HTML5 way or Native Way totally depends on the kind of project, target audience and the business model.

Hundreds gather for parade to celebrate Memorial Day

CELEBRATE: Attendees applaud participants of the annual parade that took place Saturday on Laurens Street. Hundreds gathered to honor the U.S. military. Staff photo by Chris Walsh.

Hundreds of patriotic local residents lined the downtown streets of Aiken to watch this year's Memorial Day parade make its way down Laurens Street.

American flags waved as far as the eye could see as families turned out to honor military members past and present. Even U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham yelled out, "This is the best parade in South Carolina" while he made his way down the route sitting atop a convertible.

Marching bands belted out the tunes of American lore as those in attendance clapped and saluted passersby.

"It was hot," said Jaibria Quattlebaum, who was in the parade as a part of the Aiken High School color guard.

"But it was fun," chimed in fellow color guard member Mariel Urizar, who was also sitting with Leanne Summers and Mercedes Winters at the ice cream social that followed the parade.

It wasn't just locals taking in the Memorial Day festivities either. Keri Truhe brought her family down from North Carolina to see her mother, Barb Rollins, in the parade on the AAA Home School Band float.

"Fabulous," Truhe said, sitting in the shade with her children Tori, David and Monica.

The parade was held by the James L. Hammons Marine Corps League Detachment 939 and featured more than 70 participating groups. The grand marshal was U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Perry M. Smith.

Kinder Morgan pares oil pipeline size, tanker estimate

Kinder Morgan has pared down the size of its Trans Mountain pipeline twinning project, slightly reducing the number of oil tankers that would be expected to load up in Burnaby if the controversial expansion is approved.

The $4.1-billion pipeline expansion would now increase capacity from the current 300,000 barrels per day to 750,000 ??down from a previous estimate of 850,000.

About 400,000 to 450,000 barrels per day, much of it diluted heavy crude from Alberta's oil sands, would be allocated for export via tanker, according to Kinder Morgan spokesman Andrew Galarnyk.

He said that translates into about 300 oil tankers a year calling on the Westridge Marine Terminal on Burrard Inlet, compared to 32 last year and a record of 69 in 2010.

"We previously indicated roughly 25 to 30 tankers per month," Galarnyk said. "We're probably going to be at the low end of that range now ? probably 25."

He said the tanker estimates assume continued use of existing Aframax size tankers, not larger Suezmax tankers that hold up to one million barrels, but which would require Port Metro Vancouver dredging the Second Narrows.

"Our project is going to stand alone on the current types of vessels that are calling on our facility."

The project has been downsized because some shippers that would use the twinned pipeline failed to get the approval of their boards to sign binding contracts with Kinder Morgan.

The pipeline project would open up much more access for Canadian crude oil to reach new markets in Asia.

Kinder Morgan expects to launch community consultations in the weeks ahead, which would precede a formal project application to the National Energy Board at least 18 months from now.

The company aims to begin construction in 2016 and open the new line in 2017.

Trans Mountain's right-of-way runs from northern Alberta southwest through B.C. and runs through the Lower Mainland, passing through Chilliwack and northern stretches of Abbotsford, Langley and Surrey before crossing the Fraser River and passing through Coquitlam and Burnaby.

The plan is opposed by city councils in Burnaby and Vancouver, as well as various environmental groups.

The Trans Mountain project is in addition to Enbridge's proposed $5.5-billion Northern Gateway pipeline, which would carry oil on an all-new route across northern B.C. to Kitimat and then overseas via tanker.

Useful Tips And Advice On Home Improvement Projects

Updating your home with new appliances will not only make your home look better but perhaps save you money in the long run. New appliances can save you money because newer appliances are more efficient. Look into buying energy saving appliances and see if you qualify for tax credits.

If you are looking for a functional home improvement project, try ?building up.? Walls create a lot of wasted space. Add matching bookcases in your living room or build a window seat where your family can sit and read. Simple projects like these can make every space in your home usable and valuable to your family.

If you are thinking of putting down a new hardwood floor, consider bamboo. Bamboo flooring is very popular nowadays as it is extremely durable. Bamboo is very pliable, so if you drop something extremely heavy on it, you are unlikely to dent it or scuff it. It is remarkable strong, making it particularly suitable for high traffic areas, and it also withstands moisture and humidity very well, so it?s perfect for a bathroom or kitchen.

When it comes to home improvement, think twice about decorating the walls of your house in anything extreme such as a wild color or print. A potential buyer may get a bad impression by seeing a house decorated in a way that is distasteful to them. They may choose to look elsewhere, if they do not want to put in the work to redecorate.

You will save a ton of money by living in your house while you complete home improvements, so try to stick to one room at a time. This will help make living in your home bearable, until you end up working on the only bathroom! Consider staying with friends if that situation occurs.

Store your building material in between your ceiling rafters or floor joists. Long pieces of molding and even larger materials like two by fours can be stored up and out of the way just with a little effort on your part. Simply nail a couple of furring strips across two of your exposed floor joists or rafters and slip in the material to be stored.

How to paint an indoor room quickly and easily. If possible, try to do all your painting in daylight hours, as artificial light can cause you to miss small areas. Tackle the ceiling first, painting around the edges in bands, and working your way into the center. The walls should be painted starting at the top, and working downwards in sections.

A great way to reduce your chance of mold growth in your household is by making sure your bathroom is well ventilated. Bathrooms that don?t have a window or some sort of vent usually get steamy, but are unable to be rid of the humidity. Eventually this humidity contributes to extensive mold growth.

If you have a lot of cords hanging out of your entertainment stands then you know what a pain and unsightly view cords can be. You can easily clean up your mess by using Velcro tape, which is widely available, at most stores for about $5. Roll up the unused portions of your cord and hold them together with the Velcro tape for a clean and tidy look.

Doing home improvement projects yourself can be fun and rewarding. The key is to find the proper information that will help map out a plan for your project, and follow it precisely from beginning to end. This will cut down on the errors that may crop up otherwise.

China, Israel Pledge Closer Military Ties

China and Israel are taking steps to thaw a frosty relationship with a visit between the two countries? chiefs of staff. From the Washington Post:

The improved ties have been highlighted by this week?s visit to Beijing by Israel?s military chief and a training mission to Israel by the Chinese paramilitary force that, among other things, polices the restive Tibetan and Muslim Uighur regions. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to travel to China in the coming weeks.

[...] Chen told the official China Daily that China ?attaches importance to the ties with the Israeli military and is willing to make concerted efforts with the Israeli side to deepen pragmatic cooperation.?

In a statement released by the Israeli military, Gantz mentioned a commitment to developing the relationship, including ?joint courses that are scheduled to take place.? It did not elaborate.

Such comments are a remarkable turnaround from just a few years ago, when ties deteriorated after the failed arms deals.

In recent years, China has often found itself in the middle of tensions between Israel and Iran, which has bought Chinese military technology despite objections from the U.S. and other countries. For more on this, see a previous CDT post, ?Beijing Steers ?Tricky Path? With Iran.? Read more about Chinese relations with Israel via CDT.

Finding a Void and Filling It | Business 2 Community

For brands today, the competition is fierce. Unemployment rates are up, and businesses are struggling to survive. To succeed in this world, your personal or small business brand needs to be invaluable. You need to offer the world something unique, something that makes you stand out. Basically, to be successful today, you need to find a void and fill it.

Taking a look at Curalate

Let?s take the story of Curalate as an example. Curalate recently launched, and it?s basically a monitoring and analytics platform that specifically caters to socially curated sites such as Pinterest. It?s an excellent example of how a company found a void in the current market today and set about filling it.

You see, though there are already many social monitoring and analytics platforms available in the market, most of them cater toward social networking sites that involve written content such as Facebook and Twitter. These platforms help you make sense of how your Facebook and Twitter campaign is doing: if you?re getting the results you want or not, and so on.

But Pinterest is no ordinary social networking site. It?s become highly popular due to the fact that connecting within the site involves visuals, not words. People enjoy creating the most fabulous virtual pinboards showcasing the things they love, as well as visiting, liking, and commenting on other pinboards.

Since Pinterest has become so popular, it?s no surprise that brands, both personal and business ones, have started adding it to their marketing mix. They want to know the best way to connect and engage with the users of Pinterest, in order to promote their brand, increase brand awareness and engagement, and increase their sales.

Finally the ability to measure Pinterest

And so Curalate arrived just at the right time, finding and filling a void. Brands wanted to know how to track their content on Pinterest, whether or not it?s driving traffic to their site, who their top responders and repinners are, how they measure up to other brands, and if this platform will drive revenue. Curalate gives you all that and more.

As the brainchild of Apu Gupta, Curalate?s CEO and co-founder, Curalate already has a seed funding of around $750,000 from NEA, First Round Capital, and MentorTech. It?s also recently signed up more than 150 brands and agencies that are ready to take their Pinterest campaign to the next level.

Why exactly has Curalate quickly become an invaluable tool in the market? It?s because there was a void before ? the lack of a social monitoring and analytics platform that specially caters to socially curated sites ? and it has materialized to fill it. There was a current lack in the market, and Curalate?s founders decided to address the problem, turning their product into an invaluable tool for those who aim to monitor and track the success of their campaign on socially curated sites such as Pinterest.

What can a personal brand learn from this?

There are valuable lessons to be learned here. As a personal brand, it?s essential that you don?t blend in with the crowd. Don?t offer just the same old thing that hundreds of other people offer. Stand out. Be different. Look for a void in the market and fill that void. Be the solution to a problem that is begging to be solved.

Don?t be a statistic. Don?t be a random face in a sea of strangers. After all, every person is unique in their own way, so it?s important that you really understand yourself and what unique traits and skills you have so that you can be an invaluable brand.

Take a lesson from Curalate. The company saw that there was a lack of tools that specifically catered to socially curated sites, and so they created the perfect tool to meet this need. Finally, brands no longer have to rack their brains trying to understand if their Pinterest campaign is working or not. They only have to use Curalate, so that all the information they need is laid out in its easy to use interface.

They can see how their Pinterest campaign is driving traffic to other social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. They can see who their top repinners and commenters are, and can even respond within the platform. They can see how they measure up to other brands that offer similar products or services. Basically, they can easily monitor and track their brand?s progress, so they can adjust and make changes if their campaign needs improvement.

Find a void in the market and work your behind off to fill it, so that you can ensure that you will always be an invaluable brand who will never run out of clients or customers.

Buying Real Estate Will Be Easy If You Follow These Tips ...

An approval letter will make your offer more attractive to potential sellers. Waiting for approval can cost more and will stretch out the process of buying the property.

When you are planning to purchase a large and costly commercial property, look for a reliable investment partner. It will make it easier to qualify for the loan that you need to buy the property. A partner can provide help with credit and a down payment necessary to be qualified for a loan.

Get organized before you jump into the house-buying game. Organize your information in a notebook. When you get information from classified ads, websites, your agent or just acquaintances, keep it all together in one place. This gives you a centralized repository of data you can access whenever you need it.

Research the local market. Check websites including City-data.com to find out about foreclosed homes, median selling prices, housing backlogs and the average time on the market for homes in your Zip code. You can also learn about local employers, unemployment rates, and income levels. Even if housing and employment trends aren?t positive, you still might want to consider buying a particular home if it is your dream home. This home might be the exception to the general trend in the area.

When you find a home you love, one of the first things you should do if hop on the Internet and check your potentially future neighborhood for registered sex offenders. Even though data on sex offenders is publicly available, don?t be so sure that real estate agents and home sellers will feel obligated to give this information to potential buyers. Do your own research!

Make sure you qualify for a loan before you start looking for a home. It would be a shame to find the one home you?ve been looking for and then discover that you can?t get a large enough loan to cover it. Securing a mortgage can be a lengthy process and being pre-qualified is the first step in that process.

Vehicle owners who are on the market for a new home should verify that all prospective properties have access to ample parking. This is very important when considering homes that lacks a driveway. Without plenty of parking spaces near your home, you may end up with a spot that will have you walking far.

Before starting the home buying process, get a copy of your credit report. Immediately report any mistakes on your credit report, and contact the reporting agency and creditor to have inaccurate information removed. You want to make sure your credit is in good shape as you head into the home buying process; this will help you secure a mortgage.

If you?ve made an offer for a house that seller didn?t take, don?t be discouraged, since you might find a better home. Such possibilities include offering to cover your closing costs or even do some upgrades and repairs to the property prior to your taking up residence.

It is prudent to hire an attorney. who specializes in real estate law, to help you manage foreclosure purchases. Because problems can occur during pre-foreclosure or foreclosure deals, a legal representative is a good person to have on your side. You can actually save a whole lot of cash in the end.

Always remember to be flexible in your choices. You probably won?t be able to get everything on your want list, but narrowing it down to a few things you absolutely have to have can give you a lot of what you want. If you can?t find the house you want in the location you desire, look for that type of layout in an alternate location or vice versa.

Make a list of questions you want to ask, and take it with you when you interview real estate agents. Important questions you need them to answer include how many sales they made over the last year, and how much experience they?ve had in the neighborhood you?re looking at. The real estate agent should be ready to answer any of your inquiries in a professional way.

Become familiar with the type of homes in your targeted neighborhood. The ?best? house in the neighborhood may not be ideal for you. It will be hard to sell a larger home, because the property value will go down due to homes in the area that are smaller.

When looking to purchase a new home, don?t choose one based solely on its aesthetic appeal. Practical things, like structural integrity, location and functionality need to take precedence in your decision. If you focus too much on appearances, you will end up overlooking the important features and perhaps flaws of the home.

When you set out to purchase a piece of real estate, it?s crucial to seek out a real estate agent that is experienced, honest and reliable. To find a good real estate agent, make sure to check the Internet, any licensing boards, and the Better Business Bureau. Ask reliable friends and family to get an even better idea of who to trust.

When people look at those house buying shows on TV, they generally don?t suspect that the real-world process will be a byzantine labyrinth of forms and other red tape. This advice should be utilized well when it?s time to purchase property.

Note: Okay so, I apologize for the 2 girl pair and also for Fox being a loner, but I figured since Fox kind of just bounces about she wouldn't really want to be tied to a partner. If this is a problem, let me know and I can adjust things or make a group of 3. Tilt, PM me about this if it's an issue, I understand if it is. Also, for the 2 girl pair, PM me if that's a problem as well. By no means does your character have to fall in love with who their paired with, or fall in love with all. A vamp may go for a vamp or you might actually have them go for their partner. That's all up to you, they might absolutely hate their partner, the more dramatic mix ups, the better, but nobody be getting jealous.(; Also, Fruity_Loopsxx has asked to be alone, that is why he is not with Fox.

Sweet, thanks!! However, Julian and Aurora are both Vamps... I'm guessing this is because 1) He's new and she wants him close and 2) there are more Vamps than Ww?

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it!

No problem with having Fox bounce around. Since she can teleport, I may end up having her kind of keep everyone together. Not really sure. Julien's my main man anyway lol

EDIT: Also, I'm probably being dense, but I don't really get Jeggy's question...

Nuclear talks with Iran set to resume next month

(AP) ? Iran and six world powers wrapped up talks Thursday still far apart over how to oversee Tehran's atomic program, but with resolve to keep dialogue going as an alternative to possible military action.

Envoys said they will meet again next month in Moscow after negotiations stretched out for extra hours and a sandstorm shut the airport in Iraq's capital. But the two sides agreed on little else during two dramatic days of discussions that underscored the serious challenges of reaching accords between Iran and the West.

"It is clear that we both want to make progress, and that there is some common ground," European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who is formally leading the talks, told reporters. "However, significant differences remain. Nonetheless, we do agree on the need for further discussion to expand that common ground."

Saeed Jalili, Iran's top nuclear negotiator, offered a lukewarm assessment of what the negotiations achieved, in light of European and American refusal to lift tough sanctions as Tehran had hoped.

"The result of the talks was that we were able to get more familiar with the views of each other," Jalili said at a press conference after Ashton left.

The Baghdad discussions began with hopes for progress before each side accused the other of failing to offer meaningful, realistic proposals. More tellingly, they also showed that U.S. diplomats and others are pressing neither for quick deals nor for ultimatums that could derail the sensitive talks.

"We are moving in a step-by-step process," a senior American official told reporters in Baghdad's heavily protected Green Zone. "It's good for them. It's good for us. It's good for the world."

The tempered approach offers insights into shifting American priorities over Iran's nuclear ambitions.

The U.S. has gradually moved off its demands for an immediate and complete halt to Iran's ability to make nuclear fuel, which the West and allies fear could someday provide the foundations of warhead-grade material. Iran denies it seeks atomic arms.

Instead, the Baghdad talks unveiled a Western-backed incentive package that seeks to end Iran's highest-level uranium enrichment as a first step. That leaves open speculation that Washington could ultimately accept Iran's demand to keep its enrichment labs in operation ? although possibly at reduced levels to produce lower-grade fuel suitable for its lone power-generating reactor.

Such a compromise would likely require Iran to reciprocate with moves such as allowing greater U.N. nuclear inspections and suspending work at a bunker-like enrichment site south of Tehran.

The senior U.S. official said it was still "premature" to delve into this type of endgame bargaining. "It's having the discussion about the end of the road before you've taken the first step in the road," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the negotiations more candidly.

In Washington, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said significant differences remain between the two sides and that it's now up to Iran "to close the gaps."

"Iran now has the choice to make: Will it meet its international obligations and give the world confidence about its intentions or not," Clinton said.

The overall message, however, was somehow to keep talking. The Moscow negotiations are set for June 18-19.

"All parties in the talks want to gain time," said Bruno Tertrais, a senior researcher at the Foundation for Strategic Research in Paris. "The Western countries want sanctions to keep hitting Iran, and Iran wants to keep the talk of military action in the distance."

The open channels between Iran and the six-nation bloc ? the five permanent Security Council members plus Germany ? could push back threats of military action that have shaken oil markets and fostered fears of triggering a wider Middle East conflict.

Oil prices rose toward $92 a barrel Thursday with the negotiations failing to hit a fast-track stride.

Israeli leaders, on the other hand, have been highly critical of the talks, claiming it allows Iran to buy time and drive a wedge between Washington and Jerusalem. On Wednesday, Israel's defense minister, Ehud Barak, said even possible moves by Iran to open its nuclear facilities to greater U.N. inspect don't rule out a possible Israeli military strike.

The world powers opened the Baghdad talks with a U.S.-backed proposal calling on Tehran to halt the production of 20 percent enriched uranium, which is the highest grade of enrichment that Iran has acknowledged.

In exchange, the world powers offered benefits, including medical isotopes, some nuclear safety cooperation and spare parts for civilian airliners that are needed in Iran.

Staking out a hard-line reply, Iran emphasized it has every right to pursue uranium enrichment for peaceful uses. Jalili said Iran would consider suspending the 20 percent level but only if the world powers recognize its right to enrich uranium.

He also said the West would have to give in to demands to supply Iran with enough nuclear fuel to run a Tehran medical research reactor that currently depends on the 20 percent-level enriched uranium.

"It could be an issue for cooperation over discussions related to the Tehran reactor," Jalili said.

Western leaders fear the 20 percent-level material ? well above the 3.5 percent enrichment needed for energy-producing reactors ? can be turned into warhead grade at about 90 percent enrichment in a matter of months. Iran insists its reactors are only for energy and research.

Iran went into the talks urging the West to scale back on recently toughened sanctions, which have targeted Iran's critical oil exports and have effectively blackballed the country from international banking networks. The 27-nation European Union is set to ban all Iranian fuel imports on July 1, shutting the door on about 18 percent of Iran's market.

The senior U.S. official predicted the pace of the talks would speed up in upcoming rounds.

"We are urgent about it, because every day we don't figure this out is a day they keep going forward with a nuclear program," the official said. "And there are all kinds of assessments about how long it will take them to get there."

"We still think we have some time for diplomacy, but it's not indefinite," he said.

Talks resumed in Istanbul last month more than a year after an attempt at Western dialogue with Iran collapsed.

Iran pushed for the second round in Baghdad as a way to showcase its regional influence and close ties to the Iraqi government after the U.S. military withdrawal from Iraq. During the talks, a mortar strike outside the Green Zone killed at least one person and wounded eight, according to police and medical officials. The level of violence has dropped dramatically in Iraq, although deadly attacks on security forces and civilians are still common.

Dr. Karen Becker: 10 Reasons Fish Make Good Pets

Fish make truly wonderful pets for people who don't have the time or physical space to devote to a higher-maintenance companion animal. And under the right circumstances, fish can also be good "starter pets" to teach children the responsibility of caring for a pet.

10 Reasons Fish Make Great Pets

1. Fish are known to have a tranquil, calming effect on anyone who watches them glide serenely through the water.

2. Generally speaking, fish are easier and less expensive to feed and care for than other pets; however, they do require a proper environment and knowledgeable caretakers.

3. Unlike many dogs and other furry and feathered pets, fish don't develop separation anxiety or destructive behaviors when you leave them alone at home.

4. Fish are quiet -- you never have to worry about a barking or squawking fish upsetting the neighbors or waking a sleeping baby.

5. Fish come in an infinite variety of sizes, shapes and stunning, vibrant colors.

6. Fish don't need to be walked, they don't require a litter box, and they'll never leave a surprise for you on your brand new carpet or the afghan your mother-in-law knitted for you last Christmas.

7. Fish are very clean pets that don't need to be groomed or have their teeth brushed.

8. Your fish won't track dirt and mud in from outdoors or shake litter from his paws all over the house, and he doesn't shed, slobber or drool.

9. A fish aquarium of any size, as long it's well maintained, can be a beautiful addition to any room in your home.

10. Some types of fish interact with their owners, are playful, and can even be trained to do tricks.

If You're Thinking of Getting Fish as Pets

The best advice I can offer, especially if you've never kept fish before, is to do plenty of research before you take the plunge.

I'd also recommend you start small, with a fish bowl or small aquarium and two or three hardy, low-maintenance varieties like goldfish. As your interest grows, you can upgrade to a bigger, more expensive or unusual aquarium and more exotic varieties of fish.

A few initial questions you'll need to ask yourself:

? Are you interested in tropical freshwater fish, cold-water fish, or perhaps tropical marine fish? I recommend you only buy fish that have been bred in captivity, not taken from the ocean.

? What do you know about the fish you're interested in? For example: How big will it get? If it's a large fish, will it see smaller fish in the tank as prey? If it's a small fish, will it become prey for larger fish? Will it eat live plants in your aquarium? What kind of water best suits it (temperature, hardness, pH, etc.)? Does it need to live with other fish or alone? What does it cost?

? Different types of fish require different aquarium environments. You should build your aquarium around the needs of your fish rather than on the aesthetics of the aquarium itself. Focusing on the needs of the fish you want to keep will insure they will be healthy and happy in their environment.

Every decision about the aquarium and all supplies, including food, should be made with the health of your particular fish species in mind.

? With that said, for practical reasons you'll also need to consider what size aquarium you can afford and have the space for, and where you'll set it up in your home. Aquariums aren't just large fish bowls -- even the most basic models come equipped with filtration systems, artificial lighting systems, often a heater or chiller, and some have hoods.

Fish can make wonderful pets, and aquarium keeping provides a fascinating hobby for many fish enthusiasts.

As is the case with a dog, cat, exotic or pocket pet, preparation is priceless when it comes to committing to the care and guardianship of another living being.
