Home From Spain - Go Gingham
Hello dear readers ? I?m back from a fantastic home swap and trip to Spain. My yard, garden, and email accounts are getting back under control finally. It?s amazing how many weeds can grow in 3-weeks time! There?s still a stack of mail and travel documents that need attending but I?m hoping if I ignore them long enough, someone else will swoop in and handle them.
I?ve got some great pictures and adventures to share. We covered a lot of ground on our trip and really lived it up. Spain is such a beautiful country and the people who live there were so proud to share their country with us. What I love most about traveling is experiencing life as a local, meeting new people, and making new friends. We tried our best to do all of those!
We ate, drank, and cooked our way around Spain. Yes, the beauty of a home exchange is that you get a home ? with a kitchen! Our home swap was along the? coast, in Alicante, which is south of Valencia. We fell in love with the warm, salty Mediterranean Sea. The seafood available at the local markets was amazing.
It was so fun (especially for my soccer playing kiddos!) to be in Spain for 3 of the Euro Cup games and especially the final one, which Spain won 4-0 over Italy!! Viva Espana! And, my very stylishly frugal cute outfits all worked out well. 
We had some crazy adventures with camping and our rental car almost needed towing (between Google maps sending us on a very narrow road and our taking a wrong turn) we ended up with a car wheel whirling over a ditch and the other side of the road was a very steep cliff without a guardrail! On another day, I managed to break every ?vacation rule? my kids gave me ? in about 10 minutes time. Yes, vacation rules, plural. I?m not sure why I was given rules for our trip and not my husband?he must behave more appropriately than I do!
You won?t believe the souvenirs we came home with either. We don?t usually come home with any souvenirs other than spices or salt or something you can eat. I will mention that I usually purchase unmentionables (underwear) in Europe while traveling. It seems to be better quality and a better price (and in the summer is always on sale!) than what I find here.? My daughter and I found a store we both loved called Women?s Secret, which we both agreed is a more wholesome version of Victoria?s Secret. I also found a silk scarf that I absolutely adore. Several souvenirs were free, too. It was hard to ignore the dumpsters we came across while in Barcelona. What can I say? I love a dumpster and these were especially good.
My family is compiling our lists of ?best of this? and ?best of that? and you?ll read it all soon. The weather was beautiful every day without a drop of rain and was very HOT!

Ah, the insurance industry. You?ve got to love it. No, wait, you don?t. Latest fantastic wheeze from same, an article in the SBP recently about income protection. It notes that:
It?s a common misconception that employees are paid by their employers if they are out sick. In fact, the exchequer covers the first four weeks? pay when an employee is on sick leave under a social insurance fund. Even in the public sector, employees only get half pay after six months and then nothing after a year.
True indeed. But then come some assumptions all its own. For example:
What has so far been lost from the debate is that the annual social welfare sick pay ?9,776 would put many people into severe financial difficulty if it was their sole income.
Now the flip side of this is the debate on social welfare where the amounts one typically receives are ?9,776 (ex extra payments for qualified adults). Which suggests that those on that level of income might well be in severe financial difficulty. But there?s more.
Let us contemplate for a moment the definition the writer of the article has for ?relatively affordable??
Income protection is relatively affordable, and the premiums benefit from tax relief.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has joined more than 3000 national, state, and local organizations in warning the U.S. Congress and President Barack Obama that automatic budget cuts set for January could have "devastating" effects on research, education, social services, security, and international relations.
The planned cuts threaten federal programs that "support economic growth and strengthen the safety and security of every American in every state and community across the nation," the groups wrote in a 12 July letter to Congress. "We strongly urge a balanced approach to deficit reduction that does not include further cuts to [non-defense discretionary] programs, which have already done their part to reduce the deficit."
The massive number of organizations represents the potential scope of the budget "sequestration," which would reduce non-defense discretionary spending by approximately 8% across most federal programs starting in January 2013. (Sequestration would reduce defense spending by approximately 7.5% across its affected programs.) The sequestration was included in a 2011 agreement that raised the federal debt ceiling in exchange for a commitment to reduce the federal deficit by more than $1 trillion over the next decade.
The letter's signers come from all 50 states and include veterans groups, church organizations, school districts, universities, research institutes, urban job training centers, hospitals and clinics, and nonprofit art centers.
If the sequestration is allowed to take effect, they wrote in the letter, the impact will be immediate and widespread. "There will be fewer scientific and technological innovations, fewer teachers in classrooms, fewer job opportunities, fewer National Park visitor hours, fewer air traffic controllers and airport screeners, fewer food and drug inspectors, and fewer first responders."
In a 10 July op-ed, Office of Management and Budget Acting Director Jeffrey Zients said 700,000 young children and mothers would lose nutrition assistance if the sequestration goes into effect. An estimated 100,000 children would lose places in Head Start educational programs, and more than 25,000 teachers and aides would lose their jobs as a result of the budget cuts. A report by Research!America suggests that agencies like the National Cancer Institute and the Food and Drug Administration would lose "critical funding" if the sequestration cuts occur.
Other experts have suggested that some workers who depend on federal contracts could receive layoff notices as early as October 2012, in anticipation of the sequestration, if lawmakers do not agree on strategies to raise revenue, reduce spending or some combination of those to close a budget gap of up to $1.2 trillion over the next decade to address the deficit.
The sequestration as written could amount to cuts of $5 billion or more to federal research and development investments next year, according to a AAAS analysis.
"Non-defense discretionary spending includes virtually all R&D at agencies like the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and NASA," said Matt Hourihan, director of the AAAS R&D Budget and Policy Program. "This spending has already been cut significantly as a result of the debt ceiling agreement. Adding further cuts to those already enacted would severely impact the national research enterprise.
"Public investments in research, especially basic research, are at the core of economic performance and international competitiveness," Hourihan added, "but these investments have already declined in real dollars over the past decade."
As the letter to Congress notes, the non-defense discretionary budget, including federal R&D, represented only 3.4% of the gross domestic product (GDP) in 2011. Under the recent deficit reduction agreement, this budget will decline even further, to 2.5% of GDP by 2021.
"NDD [non-defense discretionary] programs are not the reason behind our growing debt," the letter states. "In fact, even completely eliminating all NDD programs would still not balance the budget. Yet NDD programs have borne the brunt of deficit reduction efforts."
Even as many experts call for a more balanced approach that prevents further cuts to non-defense spending, some in Congress are attempting to move in the opposite direction. Several proposalsincluding the budget resolution approved by House Republicans in Marchcould have even more severe implications for R&D, by shifting the burden of cuts away from defense spending and entirely onto non-defense spending.
According to AAAS estimates, such a move could cut non-defense R&D by up to 27%, or $161 billion, over the next decade. Although the House proposal is unlikely to succeed in the Senate, Hourihan said support for cuts of this magnitude persists in some quarters.
"When we look at these proposals, we're talking about eliminating a quarter of public non-defense research," he said. "We recognize the need to pursue a responsible budget, but we also need to be responsible stewards of our economic future."

Coming back to the Stateline we had our diamonds packed for some special softball action. The all abilities wheel chair softball tournament is part of national therapeutic recreation week.
Players ages 6 and up each participated in 5 inning games in both competitive and recreational divisions. The event aims to get more people involved with all abilities sports in the Rockford area.

US Airways buys $1M of American Airline's parent debt
DALLAS --
US Airways Group on Friday seized an opportunity to influence bankruptcy proceedings for potential merger target American Airlines by buying $1?million worth of parent AMR Corp.'s debt.
US Airways, which has a hub in Charlotte and a reservations center in Winston-Salem, paid $630,000 to buy AMR's 6.25?percent notes due in October 2014 and become a creditor in the bankruptcy, the Tempe, Ariz.-based airline said.
News of the purchase followed American's statement that the airline is ready to consider strategic alternatives, including a possible merger, to its plan to exit bankruptcy as a stand-alone company.
As a creditor, US Airways gains the right to show up at bankruptcy hearings, comment on issues before the judge and file documents in the court record, said Ivan Kallick of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips and other bankruptcy lawyers. Doug Parker, CEO of US Airways, has said he wants to merge with American, although a formal bid hasn't been made.
"Parker is saying, 'Now there is no way you can lock me out,'?" said Anthony Sabino, co-founder of New York-based Sabino & Sabino law firm. "?'Now we'll know every step, from things of great magnitude to the ridiculously trivial.' He's saying, 'I knocked on the door, I grabbed a chair and I'm sitting at the table.' The timing is exquisite."
A combination of American, now the third-biggest U.S. carrier, and No. 5 US Airways would create the world's largest airline, surpassing current leader United Continental, based on miles flown by paying passengers.
US Airways garnered support from American's unions in April, reaching contracts with pilots, flight attendants, mechanics, baggage handlers and other airport ground workers, contingent on a merger. It has been working to build support among American bondholders and other creditors.
Becoming a participant in the bankruptcy case "will be particularly important now that AMR has publicly committed itself to a review of strategic alternatives," said Todd Lehmacher, a US Airways spokesman.
US Airways was one of five carriers that American CEO Tom Horton mentioned when he talked to the airline's bankruptcy creditors committee about strategic options on July 10, people familiar with the matter have said. The others are JetBlue Airways Corp., Alaska Airlines, Frontier Airlines and Virgin America Inc.
US Airways acknowledged purchasing the debt in a court filing yesterday. In that filing it also supported an American request that U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Sean Lane extend to the end of this year its exclusive right to submit a reorganization plan. The motion, supported by the creditors committee, is set for a July 19 hearing.
"US Airways' filing in court is a meaningless ploy to garner publicity," said Bruce Hicks, an American spokesman. "US Airways admits they own a very small amount of debt, which gives them no special position with the court or in this process."
The $1?million in debt held by US Airways compares with $29.6?billion in total debt that AMR listed in its Chapter 11 filing.
While US Airways gains a voice in the bankruptcy process, the carrier may have to work harder to convince the judge that it's speaking as a creditor on certain issues and not as a potential merger partner, said Michael Friedman, a bankruptcy attorney with Richards Kibbe & Orbe. The airline had no position in the case as just a would-be suitor.
"They'll have the challenge of convincing the court that what they say is related to their role as a creditor," he said Friday. "It's a low-cost way of not being booted out of the process from the get-go, but it's not as if they hit the treasure chest and are now going to be heard on all matters or what they say is going to carry any more weight than other creditors."

PART 1 of 2?
During most of my childhood, I shared a bedroom ? and even a bed ? with my little sister Betsy, who is 22 months younger than I am. ?I remember our double occupancy quite fondly.
Her? Not so much.
For starters, I wet the bed until, well, let?s just say I was still occasionally wetting the bed right up until the time I finally scored my own room. And as you might imagine, Betsy didn?t enjoy waking up to wet sheets not of her own making. She also didn?t appreciate it when I insisted on trying to hatch baby chickens in our closet, or the way I kept taking down her Tiger Beat posters and putting up my own pony posters in their place.( I figured that as the older sister, I should have some priority.) Needless to say, Betsy was very happy when I finally moved into my own bedroom, meaning she finally had one of her own as well.
My two youngest daughters ? C and G ? also share a bedroom, although G still sleeps with Jon and me in our room ? either in the crib next to our bed or in the bed with us. But her toys are all in the bedroom she shares with her next oldest sibling, and eventually, she will sleep in there too, with both girls in the double canopy bed where C already sleeps.
I absolutely love the girls? bedroom, both because it?s so pretty and because it has a beautiful story behind it;?during the month between the death of my oldest child and the day I came home from the hospital with our newborn daughter, G. ?- who was born 6 weeks prematurely ? some incredibly dear friends and family, together with an amazing organization called??Special Spaces??renovated the room from top to bottom.
In a 100 year old house-in-progress, there?s always still another room that?s not yet renovated, and ?in 2010,?Jon and I had fully intended to get the last ?unfinished? bedroom in our house renovated in time for the baby?s arrival, planning for it to serve as a nursery?slash-bedroom that both the new baby and C could then share ( C had not had a bedroom of her own). ?But then, while Henry was hospitalized, and it looked like we would be bringing home a teenage boy in a wheelchair with a major brain injury, we realized we would need to make this first floor room over to become handicapped accessible for Henry because his bedroom had been upstairs, and that just wasn?t going to work.
That?s when Special Spaces jumped in, offering to create a room that would accomodate Henry?s special needs when he came home. We were SO grateful for this. It was one less thing to worry about. But then, Henry?s condition deteriorated, and we lost him on May 31, 2010. There would be no teenage boy coming home. However, we still had a baby due in 9 weeks, and amazingly, friends, family and the volunteers of Special Spaces decided that they still wanted to renovate the room for us ? turning it into a bedroom for the baby and her toddler sister.

This is what the room looked like before the makeover. As you can see, it was awful ? just an oversized junk closet with dirty white walls, ugly BLACK trim and terrible lighting. We had no furniture or curtains, etc. It was seriously fugly.?

And here are some photos of the ?reveal? after everyone who worked so hard on the girls? bedroom had finished their work in time to surprise me on the day I came home with the new baby, five days after my c-section. I was absolutely stunned by how lovely it was, and moved to tears by the effort so many nice people had put into giving our family this amazing gift. I had already bought this dresser for $45 or something at a local thrift store, but it was bright blue. For the room renovation, a family member, repainted it and replaced all the drawer pulls. ?The sweet artwork above the dresser had hung in a friends? children?s bedroom, and she offered it for the room makeover. And my son E painted the ?Georgia? sign for his new baby sister while he was away at camp the week she came early.

My mother gave me this 1950s canopy bed for the girls, and my sister picked out fabrics. Then the incredibly kind (and talented!) Special Spaces volunteers sewed up a new canopy, dustruffle and bedspread, along with the pretty matching drapes. The changing table in the corner was a hand me down from a friend that had been dark brown. It was also repainted for the new room.

Fast forward two years. G is now a very active two year old, and C will be 5 years old in two weeks. As you might imagine with two little girls this age in our family, we have accumulated MANY, MANY more books and toys and small plastic things of various types since the room was first completed, and frankly, I?ve totally run out of room for all of it. I have been feeling quite overwhelmed by the growing collection of ?kid stuff, and that?s led to me allowing their bedroom to become very messy in recent months.
This is what the girls? bedroom floor looks like at the moment. It?s not a pretty sight.

And we have children?s books overflowing baskets and shelves all over the house .

It?s absolutely, definitely time to update the beautiful nursery-slash-bedroom with some new storage that will work with the look of the room, and that will allow the girls to begin learning to put their things away. (It?s hard to teach this lesson when there?s no place for them to put their things away!) Lately, I?ve been feeling very guilty about the completely disorganized mess in the girls? beautiful bedroom, and pondering what kind of storage I could add to the room. My criteria are:
1 ? Compliments the room?s paint and fabrics. I don?t want a storage solution that ?uglies up? their pretty bedroom.
2 ? Accomodates both books and toys ? including the girls? larger toys, plus containers full of their small toys like Polly Pockets and legos.
3 ? Offers separate spaces for each of the girls so they can learn to pick up and put away their own things.
4 ? Accessible to the girls, meaning no tall shelves that might tempt G ? AKA: Danger Toddler ? to see how high she can climb when I am not looking.
5 ? Can?t require being bolted or affixed to the walls. This is because the walls in this room are made of the original plaster from when our house was built in 1910. It?s beautiful, but it crumbles easily, and in order to hang anything like shelves, or bolt a tall piece of furniture to the wall for safety, you have to find a stud in the wall, and if there isn?t one where you want to put something, you?re just out of luck.
In other words, I want something practical, but pretty. As I?ve been actively pondering the storage conundrum in the girls? bedroom, it seemed quite auspicious when Home Depot asked me if I?d like to shop at one of their stores to solve some storage and organization problem in our actual household, and then blog about how I solved the problem. ?HECK YEAH!? was my immediate response.
