If You're Smart, You'll Use These SEO Tips : Internet Business Blog ...

TIP! The acronym for search engine optimization is SEO. By using keywords and phrases, you increase your search engine rankings.

With the proper tool, you will be well on your way to owning a well optimized site and to a ton of web traffic. Read on for more useful SEO tips.

TIP! Keep in mind that spiders can?t do anything with your URLs if they read like a bunch of random numbers. Certain language can confuse a search engine, which is why each URL should have a meaningful name, as well as pertinent keywords.

You need to have software that tracks various site metrics before you start an SEO campaign. Putting web analytic software into place will allow you to track the impact that the changes you make are having on your site.

Search Engines

TIP! When a website includes image links, the best practice for optimizing search engine ranking is ensuring that every image includes a descriptive ?alt? tag. These tags were made to replace the images when visitors of the site have image display disabled.

Website owners often overlook the important task of proofreading. Make certain that your site is easy to read for both human visitors and search engines. Search engines are more likely to disregard your website or give it a low ranking if keywords are misspelled or your content contains a number of conspicuous grammatical errors.

TIP! Visit blogs that are relevant to your products, and be sure to make comments, as these blogs will then link back to you. If you deliver a well-written and appropriate piece of writing, the blog owner may allow you to have your link there.

If you want your site to appear high in search engine results, be sure your title includes your keyword or phrase. Use the same title tag for multiple pages to get the best search engine results. Your company name should be part of your title tag and will tie all pages together. Without a well branded company name, it should not be expected that customers will search for your business this way.

TIP! While video files are great for your site, they will not help at all with your SEO. Providing a site map with descriptive keywords for your videos will allow the crawler to access this information and will greatly improve your search engine optimization efforts.

Instead of writing in AP style, use SEO style to improve search engine optimization. This style simply means increasing the number of times your keyword is repeated without disrupting the writing flow. This will help people bring up more links to your site while searching online.

TIP! You need to practice patience in SEO. Everyone is excited to see results right away after all of their effort.

Think of all the ways you can get quality inbound links connected to your site. Some proven ways include a constant stream of fresh content, press releases, directory submissions and others. Good outbound links play a key role in determining your search engine ranking.

TIP! Publish fresh content to your site as much as you can. Give yourself writing deadlines and goals and don?t break them.

This will help increase your search engine rankings. Meta descriptions serve as calls to action, because they are shown below the website hyperlink. Most systems let you tweak the meta description for each page.

TIP! Search engines will know that you are fixing your site to cheat the system and will take appropriate action. At times, large search engines, such as Yahoo and Google, have completely eliminated companies from their search results! Watch out for this, and use legitimate ways to implement search engine optimization.

It can be tempting to try to utilize every SEO trick out there for your site, but it can backfire on you. Nobody has the time to work on every single SEO technique out there, even if they do it for a living. Just pick the ones that will have the biggest impact and get them down to a science.

TIP! It isn?t necessary to assign key words to your comment tags. Instead, you should concentrate on enhancing the content of your site.

Place yourself in your customer?s shoes and try to think about what words or things they may search for in order to produce websites about eyeglasses. This will help you better select a variety of keywords. Find out what a person is likely to type into a search engine when looking for a website like yours.

TIP! Search engine optimization works differently for different search engines, and you may only be able to optimize your site for one or two of them, depending on your resources. Keyword selection is an important part of gaining recognition by different search engines.

Games and surveys can be included on your site to better assist you in finding the ideal target audience. Surveys are a great way to engage potential customers, by letting them find the best product for their needs. You should inquire about what they like to do and what their purchasing habits are. People enjoy taking surveys and you will be able to find a lot about your consumers.

TIP! Pick a domain name which has your desired keyword in it. This will draw visitors who are truly interested in your site?s content.

One vital SEO tip that you should remember is to keep an eye on your search standings at all times. If you don?t monitor your page standings then you will not know if your seo efforts are paying off. Track your ranking with Alexa or by downloading the Google toolbar.

Search Engines

TIP! For a good affiliate marketing strategy set up pay-per-click advertising. This is the easiest service to provide to affiliates, so the pay is correspondingly modest, but it can rapidly build up.

Authoring a blog and commenting on other blogs related to your website?s niche can be a good SEO technique. Blogs rank well on search results, as the search engines are constantly seeking new content and a well set-out website. To rank sites highly, search engines like to see backlinks.

TIP! Design an easy to use site map that also includes your target keywords. A site map is an easy to read, easily accessible directory of every area on your website.

A site map can help a search engine to index your pages. A site map, or navigation bar, will let the search engines know about a given page from every other page on your site. No site is too small to benefit from having a site map.

TIP! An important aspect of SEO is making a site map available on your site. If you have a site map a search engine can find you easily.

Think about what people would search for to find your site, and use those keywords often in your articles and throughout your web page. You can use the keywords in the site?s content, as well as page and paragraph titles, but keep in mind that excessive use of keywords can give search engines a negative impression, and make it rank lower in search results. Balance is the key to a well-made site.

TIP! In order to generate more hits from search engines, try using longer or plural form of your keywords. A number of search engines utilize keyword stemming.

Now that you have read the tips in this article you should see some things you need to check or change on your website. Feel free to make use of this advice and get your webpage up to the ranking it really

Go ahead dad, it is time to pinch in ~ Notes on Parenting

?

The first day of school is coming up, if it already hasn?t. Summer is drawing to an end. This usually means an end to the frequent play days, late family movie nights and other fun activities. Typically these are dad led, or highly involved activities.

It is now time to help out around house and get back into the rigorous routine of back to school. This is a tedious duty, but at the same time very rewarding.? What is often difficult for some fathers is taking the time to be involved in the daily routines, or helping with other around the house tasks.
Here are just a couple of ideas that dad?s can do to be involved with the back to school schedule:
  • Be home for dinner. While it has been noted?that they are not the cause for healthy relationships with children, they are a contributing factor and do allow a time for family discussion. Make it an effort to eat dinner together.
  • Read stories at bedtime. This is dependent on the age of your child. Reading before bed can be a soothing activity, plus it is a great opportunity to teach your child new words. Also, let?s not forget that this can be daddy cuddle time too!
  • Do chores around the house. This can be the dishes, loading emptying the dishwasher, making lunches, and so on. Whatever needs to be done, step in and help out. Do the chores with your children helping, on your own or with your wife. Some research has indicated that wives find their husbands more attractive when they help out with chores.
  • Help out with homework. This may mean you need to freshen up your algebra skills, but be ready and willing to help out with homework. This is a crucial opportunity for children to learn that they can go to parents when they are experiencing a problem that they do not know the answer to.
  • Go to games and band concerts. Extracurricular activities can be a benefit to your child, they can also be that opportunity to show support. I must caution though the habit of over-scheduling your child, this can hamper the dinner relationship, opportunities for them to do homework, and can leave chores unfinished for days.
These are just some ideas. You can incorporate some of these. But if you are aware, you will know the opportunities of where to slide in and help with the school routine.

What are some things you do to help out around the house?

Scientists find oldest occurrence of arthropods preserved in amber

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

An international team of scientists has discovered the oldest record of arthropods?invertebrate animals that include insects, arachnids, and crustaceans?preserved in amber. The specimens, one fly and two mites found in millimeter-scale droplets of amber from northeastern Italy, are about 100 million years older than any other amber arthropod ever collected. The group's findings, which are published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, pave the way for a better evolutionary understanding of the most diverse group of organisms in the world.

"Amber is an extremely valuable tool for paleontologists because it preserves specimens with microscopic fidelity, allowing uniquely accurate estimates of the amount of evolutionary change over millions of years," said corresponding author David Grimaldi, a curator in the American Museum of Natural History's Division of Invertebrate Zoology and a world authority on amber and fossil arthropods.

Globules of fossilized resin are typically called amber. Amber ranges in age from the Carboniferous (about 340 million years ago) to about 40,000 years ago, and has been produced by myriad plants, from tree ferns to flowering trees, but predominantly by conifers. Even though arthropods are more than 400 million years old, until now, the oldest record of the animals in amber dates to about 130 million years. The newly discovered arthropods break that mold with an age of 230 million years. They are the first arthropods to be found in amber from the Triassic Period.

The amber droplets, most between 2-6 millimeters long, were buried in outcrops high in the Dolomite Alps of northeastern Italy and excavated by Eugenio Ragazzi and Guido Roghi of the University of Padova. About 70,000 of the miniscule droplets were screened for inclusions ?encased animal and plant material?by a team of German scientists led by Alexander Schmidt, of Georg-August University, G?ttingen, resulting in the discovery of the three arthropods. The tiny arthropods were studied by Grimaldi and Evert Lindquist, an expert on gall mites at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Ottawa.

Two of the specimens are new species of mites, named Triasacarus fedelei and Ampezzoa triassica. They are the oldest fossils in an extremely specialized group called Eriophyoidea that has about 3,500 living species, all of which feed on plants and sometimes form abnormal growth called "galls." The ancient gall mites are surprisingly similar to ones seen today.

"You would think that by going back to the Triassic you'd find a transitional form of gall mite, but no," Grimaldi said. "Even 230 million years ago, all of the distinguishing features of this family were there?a long, segmented body; only two pairs of legs instead of the usual four found in mites; unique feather claws, and mouthparts."

The ancient mites likely fed on the leaves of the tree that ultimately preserved them, a conifer in the extinct family Cheirolepidiaceae. Although about 97 percent of today's gall mites feed on flowering plants, Triasacarus fedelei and Ampezzoa triassica existed prior to the appearance and rapid radiation of flowering plants. This finding reveals the evolutionary endurance of the mites.

"We now know that gall mites are very adaptable," Grimaldi said. "When flowering plants entered the scene, these mites shifted their feeding habits, and today, only 3 percent of the species live on conifers. This shows how gall mites tracked plants in time and evolved with their hosts."

The third amber specimen, a fly, cannot be identified because, outside of the insect's antennae, its body parts were not well preserved. But now that the researchers have shown that amber preserved Triassic arthropods, they are eager to find more specimens.

"There was a huge change in the flora and fauna in the Triassic because it was right after one of the most profound mass extinctions in history, at the end of the Permian," Grimaldi said. "It's an important time to study if you want to know how life evolved."

Japan wins Little League World Series title

Noriatsu Osaka went four-for-four with three homers and four RBI as Japan routed Goodlettsville, Tennessee 12-2 to claim the 2012 Little League World Series championship.

Yuta Ishida homered and drove in three runs and pitcher Kotaro Kiyomiya struck out eight and allowed just one hit in four innings for Japan on Sunday.

It marked the eighth LLWS title for Japan, which has played in the Williamsport finale five of the past seven years.

The Tennessee team could not keep up with the undefeated Japanese club. Tennessee advanced to the final by beating Petaluma, California 24-16 on Saturday.

Pitchers Justin Smith allowed five runs in three innings and Blake Osborne also gave up five runs for the Americans.

This was the first time a team from Tennessee reached the final of the LLWS.

Besse Cooper, World's Oldest Woman, Turns 116!

Besse Cooper didn't merely celebrate a happy birthday yesterday in her adopted down of Monroe, Georgia. She celebrated an historic occasion:

The former school teacher turned 116 years old, becoming certified by the Guinness World Records as the oldest woman alive. She's only the fourth America ever, in fact, to reach that age.

Old Woman

What's Cooper's secret?

"I mind my own business," said the Sullivan, Tennessee native. "And I don't eat junk food."

Cooper is a widow (her husband passed away in 1963) with four children, 12 grandchildren and many more great-grandchildren. She also now has a bridge named after her in Between, GA.

"The older she has gotten the more wittier she has gotten," her son, Sidney Cooper, told the local paper, The Walton Tribune.

Let's everyone get together and wish Besse a very happy birthday. Just make sure to do it rather loudly.

Garcia builds a 2-shot lead at Barclays

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) ? The greens were so fast that Sergio Garcia didn't know when the ball was going to stop. He was happy to see the day end with a 2-under 69, giving him a two-shot lead over Nick Watney going into the final round of The Barclays.

Garcia fell out of the lead with a three-putt bogey on the third hole, but he didn't have another one the rest of the round on a Bethpage Black course that lived up to is tough reputation Saturday because of greens that reminded players of another course on Long Island.

Shinnecock Hills came up more than once. That's when the USGA lost control of the greens in the final round of the U.S. Open, and even had to water one green in the middle of the round. Bethpage wasn't that bad, but it was close.

Watney, who made five putts over 15 feet, three-putted the final hole when his putt went racing 10 feet by the cup. He had to settle for a 71, giving him another round in the final group with Garcia.

"Hopefully, the pins will be in spots where there's some grass on the greens and the ball will stop rolling," Watney said.

Tiger Woods, who started the third round three shots out of the lead, three-putted for bogey three times on the front nine alone. He had another three-putt on the 14th hole, this one from 15 feet, and had a 72 that put him six shots behind.

"I don't remember blowing putts by 8 to 10 feet," Woods said. "So that was a bit of a shocker."

Garcia went four years without winning on the PGA Tour and now has a chance to make it two in a row. He was at 10-under 203, and only four players were within four shots of the lead.

Kevin Stadler played early, when the greens still had some moisture, and had a remarkable round of 65 without any bogeys. He moved up from a tie for 42nd to alone in third place, three shots behind. Brandt Snedeker started strong and closed with nine pars, which was equally impressive, for a 68 that put him four back.

Phil Mickelson might still be in the game. Twice a runner-up at Bethpage Black ? both times in the U.S. Open ? Mickelson played early Saturday and had a 67. That eventually put him in the large group at 4-under 209 that included Woods, Louis Oosthuizen, Lee Westwood and Charl Schwartzel, an impressive collection of players who have either won a major or been No. 1 in the world.

Garcia can set the tone for the final round.

"If Sergio goes out and shoot 4 or 5 under, you've just got to tip your hat," Watney said.

His third round was worthy of praise. Of the final 18 players who teed off, Garcia was the only one to break 70.

"If you play well, you can shoot a decent score, but as the day goes on, the course just gets harder and harder," Garcia said. "No doubt playing in the morning makes it a little bit easier. Even though the greens were still firm, they were probably not as firm and probably not quite as fast. It's just we know what Bethpage Black is all about. We know it's a tough golf course, and you've just got to realize that's the way it's going to be."

And so it was.

Slugger White, the tour's vice president of rules and competition, disputed the idea that course was on the verge of being unplayable.

"The golf course is not unplayable," he said.

White conceded a few greens became "crusty," particularly at Nos. 2 and 8, and that the staff was thinking there would be more cloud cover. He went out to the greens after the last group came through and said, "I saw no issues."

"Players always want firm and fast," he said. "It seems like when we give them firm and fast, they don't want firm and fast. I hear Tiger say it was too soft on Thursday. And then some guy walks off the tee and says, 'Have you guys run out of water?' Where do you go? We're doing the best we can."

Watney didn't entirely agree.

"There's firm and fast, and then there's this," Watney said. "I mean, this is pretty extreme."

Also extreme was the turnaround atop the leaderboard.

Watney rolled in another 15-foot putt for birdie on the ninth hole, and when Garcia made bogey on the 10th, Watney had a three-shot lead. That didn't last long. With his first poor swing of the day, Watney went from the middle of the 11th fairway to the right bunker and made bogey, while Garcia holed a 20-foot birdie putt. Watney followed with a tee shot well to the left to set up another bogey, and the lead was gone. And on the par-5 13th, Garcia made birdie to take the lead.

He never gave it back.

Watney took three putts twice over the last four holes, one from long range and down the hill on the 15th, though he accounted for that with a 40-foot birdie from the fringe on the 17th. That's what made this day so scary. Any putt that missed was likely to roll well beyond the cup, making players more cautious than usual.

"This will tell you how fast it was," Garcia said. "Usually when you are putting on fast greens, you have an idea where the ball is going to stop. And today, you didn't. You thought the ball was going to stop 2 feet behind the hole, and it went 6. It was pretty much as simple as that.

"Was it unfair? I wouldn't say it was unfair," he said. "It was borderly. It was very close. It felt like the greens were very close to Shinnecock Hills at the U.S. Open."

Ernie Els might have summed up the day better than anyone. He finished his 72, sat down for lunch and said, "The boys out there are going to have some fun."

Ecuador's President Correa sees no end to Assange standoff in UK

Ecuador's president says he understands Assange's fears about being sent to the US to face charges over WikiLeaks' 2010 publication of secret US cables, but he also remains open to talks over Asssange's fate.

By Eduardo Garcia,?Reuters / August 23, 2012

Ecuador's President Rafael Correa speaks at a meeting with foreign correspondents in Quito, Ecuador, Wednesday. The main topic was WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and the asylum granted to Assange by Ecuador's government.

Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa doubts Britain and Sweden will change their tough stance on WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, especially since they are negotiating with a small, poor country like his.

Ecuador's leftist leader told Reuters in an interview on Thursday that he remained open to talks over the fate of the former computer hacker, who has been holed up at the Ecuadorean embassy in London for more than two months.

Allegations of rape

Britain says it is determined to extradite Assange to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning over allegations of rape and sexual assault. Correa says he shares Assange's fears that he could then be sent to the United States to face charges over WikiLeaks' 2010 publication of secret U.S. cables.

"We have always had faith in dialogue. You never lose hope," said Correa, who granted asylum to the 41-year-old Australian last week.

"But ... I'm a bit skeptical that Britain, Sweden or the United States will change their position, since they are not used to doing so, and even less so when they are in talks with a 'Third World country' like Ecuador," he said.

"We've always been underestimated, but we still have hope."

Despite Assange's claims that Washington is plotting to extradite, U.S. and European government sources say the United States has issued no criminal charges against the WikiLeaks founder and has launched no attempt to extradite him. The Obama administration has said his fate is in the hands of Britain, Sweden and Ecuador.

Correa, a 49-year-old economist, is a self-declared enemy of the U.S. "empire" who seldom shies away from a fight, whether it is with the Catholic Church or international bondholders.

Prevent Assange from facing justice

His government says it never intended to prevent Assange from facing justice in Sweden, and it has called on Britain and Sweden to provide him with written guarantees that he would not be extradited from there to any third country.

Ecuador's president said it would be "perfectly possible" in theory for London and Stockholm to issue those assurances.

If Assange received guarantees from Britain and Sweden that he would never be extradited to the United States, Correa added, the WikiLeaks founder would decline Ecuador's asylum offer and hand himself over to Swedish prosecutors.

"Those guarantees can be given by Sweden. They can be given by Britain by extraditing him under that condition. Neither one wants to provide those guarantees," Correa said.

"He has never refused to face justice in Sweden ... That's why I think there is a hidden plan to send Assange to a third country. What other conclusion could you reach?"

Diplomatic immunity

Correa said he remains angry at a veiled threat by Britain to enter its embassy in London's affluent Knightsbridge district and arrest Assange. Speaking to Reuters in a TV studio in Quito, he said that had been "a monumental diplomatic mistake."

"Can you imagine if a similar threat were issued by a third world country to a first world nation?" he asked. "That would have been a global scandal. This has become one, but they have tried to minimize it by saying that it's a bilateral problem."

Correa has long been critical of what he sees as heartless capitalism, and has accused foreign investors of profiting from Ecuador's natural resources while doing little for the poor.

Since taking office in 2007 he has put in place reforms to increase the state's revenue from the oil sector and redistribute wealth by building schools, hospitals and roads.

'Arrogance and ethnocentrism'

He said the Assange saga had been worsened by the "arrogance, neo-colonialism and ethnocentrism" that other countries had shown towards Latin America as a whole.

But he said the diplomatic stand-off also marked the beginning of a "new era" during which Latin Americans would more staunchly defend their sovereign rights.

"This is not a about patching up systems that have not worked for centuries," Correa said. "It is about changing the systems, and that is why we are clashing with national and international powers that want things to stay as they are."

'Frankenstein' virus could assemble itself from app snippets

17 hrs.

Many malware and viruses can be identified by detection software because of known bits of malicious code. But what if there was a virus compiled from little bits of programs you already had installed? That's just what two security researchers are looking into.

Vishwath Mohan and Kevin Hamlen at the University of Texas at Dallas are interested in how malware disguises itself in order to propagate more widely. After all, with virus detectors and operating systems getting frequent updates, any positively identified virus will be destroyed on sight around the world soon after.

Malware authors and security experts have tried different ways to camouflage malicious code, like encrypting it or adding garbage data to confuse the scanners. But Mohan and Hamlen take it a step further: their virus builds itself out of pieces your computer knows to be safe ? bits of applications like your word processor, image editor?or Web?browser.

Appropriately enough, they call it Frankenstein, and although right now it's still just a proof of concept, it's an indication of one avenue hackers might take in the future. Why bother sending out a whole application stuffed full of code that could be identified as bad news when you can just send a "blueprint" of what it needs, and let it assemble itself on-site, as it were?

Their Frankenstein is a "toy" version, which means it does not propagate itself onto other computers, but it can make variants of itself by stealing different code from different programs. That means that every "mutant" version?it creates of itself will be significantly different, but still check out when looked at piece by piece for suspicious functions. And there's no shortage of the snippets of code, which they call "gadgets." As they remark in the paper describing their work:

The results show that even with the limited capacity of our?prototype, 2?3 binaries are suf?cient to bring the number of?gadgets above 100,000. On average we discovered about 46?gadgets per KB of code, ?nding approximately 2338 gadgets?per second.

In other words, just a few basic applications rendered thousands of pieces to use.?That many spare parts could keep the virus scanners busy for quite some time, though there is always the risk that they could be trained to look for the "blueprint" instead of the resultant patched-together virus. But that too could be made to look legitimate.

Mohan and Hamlen hope that being aware of camouflaging systems like this will make virus detection stronger and better; after all, if they didn't invent it, some less well-meaning person might have instead, and it would be at large instead of in a paper.

The research was supported by Air Force and National Science Foundation grants. The paper, "Frankenstein: Stitching Malware from Benign Binaries,"?is available for free download here, as well as the slides from Mohan and Hamlen's presentation at the USENIX security workshop.

6 dead in Quebec Legionnaire's disease outbreak

Legionnaire's disease, which hit Quebec in mid-July, has infected 65 people and killed six, health authorities of the French-speaking Canadian province said.

"We are very concerned by the current situation," Quebec public health chief Francois Desbiens said.

"It's the largest legionellosis outbreak in Canada in recent years."

Sixteen new cases were reported on Thursday alone.

Health authorities suspect improper maintenance of cooling towers in air conditioning systems are at fault for the outbreak.

Legionella bacteria grow in stagnant water in such appliances, then spread with droplets expelled by the system during operation.

The 68 cooling towers housed in 28 buildings were inspected, cleaned and disinfected, but the operation has not put an end to the epidemic.

The disease, which poses a risk for people with weak immune systems, can be treated with antibiotics.

Legionnaire's disease -- discovered in 1976 during a veterans convention in the United States, where 29 people died -- is an infection that causes high fever, dry cough and pneumonia.

White Sox beat Yankees to end 3-game skid

By RICK GANO

CHICAGO (AP) - The White Sox put a lousy weekend in Kansas City behind them in a hurry. Really, there was no choice with the New York Yankees coming to town to start a three-game series between first-place teams.

Alexei Ramirez hit a go-ahead homer, Adam Dunn drove out his major league best 36th and Chicago rallied twice Monday night to beat the Yankees 9-6 in the opener.

"We played so bad in Kansas City," Dunn said of three-game sweep by the Royals that featured some sloppy baseball by the White Sox.

"The energy was going down a little bit in Kansas City. We didn't get off to a good start tonight. I think it shows the resiliency of this team. Obviously tonight wasn't looking good. We had some opportunities early to drive some runs in and we didn't and fell behind. We just kept battling."

Dewayne Wise and Gordon Beckham also homered for Chicago, which fell behind early 3-0 and also trailed 6-5.

"Every game is important. What happened in Kansas City, we have to leave in the past. The race is so tight, every night is going to be important," said Ramirez, who lost a double earlier in the game when umpires changed a call and ruled his bouncer over third foul.

"That's baseball. The calls will go your way in certain instances and I just had to take it in stride," Ramirez said. "Fortunately I was able to hit the home run and more importantly we won the game, that's the most important thing of all."

Ramirez connected with two outs in the seventh off Boone Logan (4-2) for his seventh homer of the season. Brett Myers (2-1) got the win by pitching two-thirds of an inning. Addison Reed worked the ninth for his 22nd save in 25 chances.

"It's tough to swallow. We've been scuffling as a whole down there lately," Logan said. "You gotta grind through it and get through it. We know that and we talk about it. We're doing the best we can."

Ramirez's homer came on a 3-2 pitch.

"It was a bad pitch, either way, but I was looking to throw it low, in the dirt. I was gonna show it to him, but in the dirt," Logan said. "If I walked him, onto the next guy. If he swings, I strike him out."

New York's Derek Jeter homered and had four hits, tying Eddie Murray for 11th place on the career hits list (3,255). He also took over 13th place on the runs scored list (1,845), passing Craig Biggio.

"He just continues to have big days for us. That's what he's doing. It is pretty amazing," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

Wise hit a two-run homer for Chicago as the White Sox scored five times in the fifth for a 5-3 lead, but the Yankees quickly went ahead in the top of the sixth on Jeter's solo homer and RBI singles by Mark Teixeira and pinch-hitter Casey McGehee.

However, Beckham homered off Joba Chamberlain to start the bottom of the sixth, tying it at 6.

The Yankees scored three early runs against White Sox starter Gavin Floyd, who was wild from the outset and lasted only 2 1-3 innings.

Wise, designated for assignment by the Yankees in July, hit his sixth homer in the fifth, shortly after umpires reversed a call and ruled that an apparent double by Ramirez was a foul ball.

"I mean I'm not going to lie. When you play against a former team you obviously want to go out there and try and do well," Wise said. "I don't think too many people can leave one team that was in first place and come to another one, so I'm pretty blessed and just glad to be here."

Ramirez led off with a bouncer over third that third base umpire Bill Welke ruled a fair ball with Ramirez reaching on second. But after an umps' conference, they reversed the call and ruled it was foul. White Sox manager Robin Ventura came out of the dugout for an explanation but the changed call stood and Ramirez then struck out. At the time it was a pivotal call because Beckham followed with a single and then Wise homered.

Kevin Youkilis followed with a single and Dunn and Paul Konerko walked to load the bases and finish Yankees starter Freddy Garcia. Chicago tied it on Alex Rios' fielder's choice grounder.

A.J. Pierzynski greeted reliever Clay Rapada with an RBI single to center, giving Chicago a 4-3 lead and after the Yankees brought in their fourth pitcher of the inning in Chamberlain, Dayan Viciedo hit another run-scoring single.

Jeter hit the game's first pitch for a single, tying him with Nap Lajoie for 12th place on the career list. Nick Swisher walked before Beckham made a nice back-handed stop on Robinson Cano's grounder to get a force at second. Teixeira hit an RBI single and Eric Chavez a run-scoring fielder's choice.

Curtis Granderson hit a bases-loaded single to make it 3-0 in the second before Rios' strong throw from right cut down Cano at the plate for the final out.

Garcia lasted 4 1-3 innings. He gave up six hits and five runs with eight strikeouts.

Floyd threw 50 pitches in the first two innings and was yanked after just 2 1-3 innings - his shortest outing of the season - when he gave up five hits, three runs and four walks.

NOTES: Yankees ace CC Sabathia is scheduled to throw a bullpen session this week and manager Joe Girardi said how the left-hander feels after that workout could determine if he can come off the DL and return to the rotation. ... White Sox CF and leadoff hitter Alejandro de Aza missed his third straight game with a sore back.

Falcon football team struggles, unites at beach days

By BEN WATANABE
South Whidbey Record Reporter
August 17, 2012 ? Updated 3:07 PM?

DOUBLE BLUFF ? For the 40 Falcon football players, three days of practice at Double Bluff are far from a day at the beach.

Despite the 70-degree temperatures in the morning, the sand, the sun and the surf, the two-hour workouts are arduous, even tedious at times.

Sand is an insidious surface to condition on. The grains when dry are loose and give out from under the players? feet as they run. On the wet sand, it has a bit of subduction to it, sticking to the feet and pulling the soon-to-be fully padded linemen, linebackers, running backs, quarterbacks and receivers. Combined with the heat (and a lazy summer for some of the athletes), and the practices are exhausting.

That?s no excuse to grab an early drink of water or not pay attention to longtime co-head coaches Mark Hodson and Andy Davis.

?Quit acting tired,? Davis said to players as they hunched over, hands on their knees and sucking in air.

?I don?t care if you think you?re tired yet because we?re just getting started,? Hodson told the team during the first day of beach practices. ?What we?re doing here is getting you to grow up to be men.?

Nonetheless, beach days are a tradition for South Whidbey High School?s football program, enough to bring out a few spectators and the principal. There are purposes beyond conditioning, though in the injury-prone sport of football fitness is crucial, that make a few days at the beach worthwhile. The most important aspect is uniting 40 or more individual athletes into one team.

?There?s no reason to be disappointed for something you have not prepared for,? Hodson told the players during a break.

South Whidbey High School began its two-a-day practices Aug. 15. Football begins its season earlier than other fall sports, which is allowed by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association ? the state?s ruling athletics organization. About 40 players showed up for the first practice of beach days, which is about 10 fewer than last year. The Falcon football team will usher in a new era for the high school as it begins life as a 1A program. Sports classifications are determined every two years by student enrollment. The number of students enrolled has dropped for the past decade across the South Whidbey School District. South Whidbey High School has an enrollment of 469 students, as listed by the WIAA, which makes it the sixth-largest 1A school. The math is not parallel for football?s numbers, however, and doesn?t mean South Whidbey has the sixth-largest football team.

?This is one of the smallest squads we?ve had in a long time,? Hodson said. ?It?s a team sport. We have to build the concept of ?team.??

Like any of the ?Rocky? films, the first beach day was full of running on the sand and feats of strength. Players warmed up with knee touches, walking about 20 yards while bending down to one knee, bringing their opposite elbow down to the sand then back up.

Then they sprinted.

And they sprinted again.

And they sprinted some more.

Sand sprints were brutal, especially the relays.

Those relays were made more difficult during ferry rope runs, where players dragged the 15-foot line behind them. And those races were made even more challenging with the 170-pound log runs.

As players ran from cone to cone, trying to be the first team to finish for points the coaches? tracked during practice, the sand went from its picturesque tide lines into a mess. On the turns at the cone, players? feet slipped out from under them, sending the Falcons diving into the sand. There was no laughter from the players, only encouragement to keep running, to push themselves faster to the finish.

Those lessons will be needed during the season as South Whidbey finds its way through a new era of 1A football.

And that era began with a few days at the beach.

China And Japan Fail To Ease Tensions After Japanese Nationalists Visit Disputed Islands

Chinese protesters smash a Honda in Shenzhen on Sunday. Photo: Reuters

Anti-Japan protests erupted in the major Chinese cities of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shenyang, Hangzhou, Harbin, Qingdao, and elsewhere across the country on Sunday.

In response to landings made by Japanese ultra-nationalists on the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands, Chinese citizens turned out to show their ire -- in some cases attacking Japanese stores and products. The turnout is expected to be the largest since major diplomatic and territorial disputes between the two countries in 2005 led to widespread demonstrations in China and expanded into broader trade battles.

Ten Japanese nationalist activists swam ashore from a fleet of 20 vessels sailing near the islands on Sunday. Tokyo refers to them as the Senkakus -- Beijing and Taipei call them the Diaoyu Islands. Disputed ownership of the eight islets can be traced back to the end of World War II. China (and Taiwan) claim that sovereignty was returned after the war; Japan says the post-war redrawing of borders in Asia did not include the tiny archipelago.

The characters used to represent the main island of the group, Uotsuri-jima (Japan) or Diaoyu Dao (China), are in fact written the same way in both languages, and only have negligible differences in ordering.

The 10 activists who swam onto Uotsuri/Diaoyu on Sunday morning (Tokyo time), unfurled Japanese flags, and then returned to their boats. The Japanese coast guard called the action unsanctioned, and warned the group to depart, but did not take action to arrest or reprimand the group.

Follow us

On Wednesday, a group of Chinese 14 nationalists from Hong Kong were arrested for illegally entering Japanese territory when traveling to the islands. Seven made the trip ashore, the first time since 2004 that non-Japanese have set foot on the area. The group carried both the red and yellow starred flag of the People's Republic of China and the blue-backed white sun flag of the Republic of China (Taiwan) onto Uotsuri/Diaoyu.

The Hong Kong group, known as the "Action Committee for Defending the Diaoyu Islands," says that its trip was aimed at pre-empting the Japanese who landed on Sunday.

Tokyo originally attempted to deflate tensions with China by quickly deporting the 14 back to Hong Kong on Friday. That move now seems far less effective in light of the Japanese nationalists' activities.

Beijing warned on Saturday that "any unilateral action taken by Japan on the islands is illegal and invalid."

On Friday, Taipei chimed in to say, "It is in keeping with our government's territorial claim that the national flag of the Republic of China was on the Diaoyu islands, which Japan is furtively occupying."

The flotilla of 20 Japanese vessels were carrying the activists to honor the country's war dead, as well as right-wing parliamentarians and regional politicians looking to showcase their nationalistic credentials.

The Associated Press quoted Koichi Mukoyama, one of seven Japanese Diet members on the ships, who said that Japan needed "to solidly reaffirm our own territory," due to the earlier landing of the Chinese nationalists.

Seiji Maehara, a former Japanese foreign minister and now policy chief for the governing Democratic Party of Japan, urged further resources for the coast guard and defenses for the disputed islands. "We should discuss not only [increasing] the number of staff and ships but also possibilities of various other supports [to the coast guard]," said Maehara.

China's foreign ministry said on Sunday, "The Japanese side should properly handle the current issue and avoid seriously damaging the overall situation of China-Japan relations."

About The Boosting Energy Consulting Industry ? News and Society

As more people, organizations, and businesses find ways to acquire cheap, reliable, efficient, and clean energy, more and more energy consulting specialists are being hired for a multitude of services. While some people are entering the education field to eventually begin to work in this field, many companies are sprouting up that seek to offer global players from multinational corporations to governments with quality consulting services, said some house builders.

One thing these specialists use is market and trend data that analyzes the global energy market. Political and social changes in Russia could affect the energy market in Western Europe, while actions of OPEC can affect the global price of oil. Political tensions that can lead to the buildup of war or conflict can also affect the marketplace. The trend data that covers these subject areas are what energy consulting professionals must constantly stay on top of to ensure the best analysis of the market is given. As such, those who work in this industry must constantly stay on their game to maintain a competitive edge over their competitors.

Other specialists lend knowledge and expertise on efficient ways to deliver energy, make it cleaner, or how to extrapolate it from alternative sources. This might mean that consultants must have an expertise in electric, civic, or mechanical engineering. Depending on the project, energy consulting services must have a strong grasp of many areas within the energy sector. This means keeping an updated knowledge about the latest market trends, industry terms, technology, various energy systems, their mechanics, transportation methods, and demand response activities.

For many companies, consulting projects transcend energy markets and industries. Because of this, many companies market themselves to benefit both manufacturing and regulatory sectors, promising to optimize energy performance for an array of public and private organizations. Larger projects that may contract these services include state government building, college and university campuses, skyscrapers, large banks, music halls, symposiums, city arenas and other large buildings. On the smaller scale, services can target residential homes, small schools, municipal buildings, and camping sites. As such, companies offer various services in business planning, benchmarking, natural gas and renewable energy consultation, smart grid energy consulting, as well as expertise in legal, litigation, regulatory, and policy making in the energy sector.
