Ellenberger? No way! It’s Fitch that Story wants next

Rick Story surprised many by beating Thiago Alves in just about every aspect of their bout on Saturday. With a collegiate wrestling background, Story used some grappling to wear and slow down Alves, but where he really scored the victory was on the feet. Alves is a feared striker, but was outlanded 79 to 54.

Following the fight, Story (13-3 , 6-1 UFC) was brimming with confidence. When? asked about fighting another rising prospect in the division, Jake Ellenberger, Story was quick to say no. Ellenberger has won four straight. Story, 26, and Ellenberger met outside the UFC in 2008 with Story winning.

"I fought Ellenberger before and I beat him pretty handily. It would be a step back for me just because I dominated him," Story told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "He's going to need a couple of wins to (earn a rematch)."

Story, ranked No. 23 at welterweight by the USA Today/Bloody Elbow rankings, wants No. 2 Jon Fitch.

"I think I'd match up really well. I believe I have really good takedown defense and really good scrambling skills to be able to keep it on the feet. I think I have the power to put it to him, so stylistically I think it's a great matchup for me," Story said. "Jon Fitch has great control, great wrestling, but I've seen him get clipped before. He's up there and it will get me that title shot quicker."

Story probably won't get Fitch, but looks like he can compete with just about anyone ranked ahead of him. The UFC welterweights in the top 22 include Jake Shields, Josh Koscheck, Carlos Condit, Diego Sanchez, Martin Kampmann, Matt Hughes, Anthony Johnson, Mike Pyle, Paulo Thiago, Dong Hyun Kim, Ellenberger, Dan Hardy, John Hathaway and Chris Lytle.

Fitch (23-3, 13-1 UFC) is sidelined after shoulder surgery. He's expected back some time in the fall. His camp did a great video look at Fitch immediately following the surgery. It doesn't look like a very pleasant recovery process.

Gmail Gives Power to the People Widget

Google has tweaked its Gmail system with a new People Widget. When reading a message within Gmail, the user will see info about the contact like recent messages, shared documents, upcoming events and so forth. The feature will be rolled out in the next couple of weeks.

Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) has introduced a new tool to the social Reach More Customers with Live Chat - Free Whitepaper networking world using one of its strong suits: Gmail.

In the next couple weeks, Google will debut a feature for Gmail called the "People Widget." The widget will appear to the right of messages and display information about contacts, including recent messages, shared documents, calendar events, statuses and, perhaps most striking, photos. Users can use widgets to schedule group meetings and online chats.

The widget will be rolled out in the next two weeks.

Google has been continually updating Gmail with more functionalities and new add-ons. The People Widget helps make it easier to connect with contacts by consolidating multiple Google features, including Google Buzz and Docs, directly next to the Gmail message, according to the company.

Another connected feature is phone calls conducted through Google Voice. The widget's capabilities are similar to an existing Gmail add-on called "Rapportive," which connects with Facebook. Google did not note any connectivity between widget and other social networks.

Google did not respond to a TechNewsWorld request for further comment by press time.

A Very Useful Business and Personal Tool

One of the strong features of the widget is its trail of previous communications with an individual contact. This could be a nice touch for anyone who has scrambled to find old-but-pertinent emails while talking with a business contact.

"It gives you a social history of the person you're communicating with," Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, told TechNewsWorld. "It's one of the more advanced communication features Google has produced. This is base-level contact management. It's the type of system a service person might use for corresponding with a customer. This hasn't been available for individuals until now.

"It has some very useful business benefits as well as personal benefits," added Enderle. "It allows you to better manage your relationships .This is particularly helpful for those us who are aging and need help remembering things."

Google's new tool bridges the world of email and social networking.

"It's a different factor than Facebook, and it's based on something Google already has," said Enderle. "This brings intelligent social networking aspects to a tool that is already good. For reaching into social networking, this is a much better idea than coming up with a clone of Facebook. A clone could never work. This could work."

Google Social Synergies

Assuming Google will be discrete with the information posted in the widget, this could be a useful tool. But if widget users search to dig into a contact's underbelly, the tool could potentially be embarrassing.

"To the extent that this can be done with a low 'creep factor,' then it should be a net plus to the user experience," Al Hilwa, program director, applications development software at IDC, told TechNewsWorld. "I don't see this is a head-to-head move versus Facebook, but any company that is sitting at a large list of authenticated users should try to bring them together in some way and discover synergies.

The widget is essentially about socializing user interfaces and creating value for both users and the company that is providing free services, Hilwa noted.

Google Goes Social

The People Widget could be the beginning of additional social connectivity within Google, especially if it becomes popular. "This plays into Google's social aspirations heavily -- they're building on their current technologies to create a more social experience," Steven Savage, technology project manager and Geek 2.0 blogger, told TechNewsWorld. "In this case it's actually kind of toned-down, which suggests to me they're going to implement social in pieces.

Google has tried different approaches to integrate social features into its ecosystem of products. Savage agreed that this is like adding a Facebook feature to Gmail. "It's not a bad place to add such functionality, actually," said Savage. "Google has not had any big social network successes. They may use this to change that."

The added info in widget messages would be useful, said Savage. "I think this is the right track -- you introduce small features so people get used to them, give feedback, and adapt them," said Savage. "I think gradual -- but not slow -- evolution is the way to go. Plus, they make it harder for competitors to guess what they're doing."

fasih.info ? Blog Archive ? Home and Family Parenting With P

Have you heard the buzz? Are you wondering what all of the fuss about attachment parenting is? This article provides the basics to understanding this parenting philosophy that was developed by Physician William Sears, the famed pediatrician. Attachment parenting is based on the idea that attachment is actually half of a child?s developmental psychology the best male enhancement products. There are quite a number of parents who ascribe to this idea, as it has been shown to promote a bond with their youngster that will final forever. Parents that follow the attachment parenting concept uphold the set of principles that have been developed by Dr. Sears. Here?s a look at the eight principles which are concerned:

To take a management position in your family, there are several components that will make you more effective and successful as a parent leader: First off, you can?t be an effective and successful leader to your children should you aren?t a pacesetter of your own life. You must decide who you want to be as a mom family and parenting . Our youngsters watch our behavior to discover ways to behave in the world. We have to ensure that we?re the positive examples we would like our children to model after best male enhancement device. One of the ways we turn out to be higher leaders of our own lives is to apply self-awareness and self- growth.

With out self-consciousness it is vitally hard to create a vision for the longer term for you and your family. Self-growth lets us bridge the gaps of where we are in the present day and where we need to be.

PARENTING IS A NEVER-ENDING JOB. A baby has to be taught the best way to tackle responsibilities for all and any actions that they perform and they need to be liable for whatever consequences (from doing bad selections) that lies forward them. To boost a toddler into being a good adult positively takes a commitment (life long that is). A job that is never-ending, that what?s parenting is all about. Parenting is the hardest job and that applies as to whether you are a first time parent or whether you already have a number of kids. Parenting is probably the most underpaid job ever and you do not even earn anything from being a parent penis enlargement device.

Cable television programmers (and who ever makes these kinds of decisions) certainly had their hearts in the right place after they developed and put in to place the tv scores system. You may be familiar with such ratings as TV-G ,TV- 14, and naturally the scariest of all the ratings (for young dad and mom anyway) being the TV-Ma rating.

Although, these television ratings seemed like a great idea when they were being put in to drive, unfortunately the logic behind this method was flawed.

Now I am not saying that by communicating these values along with your teen that it will likely be a win-win all around. What you have got now is a moral compass for your family, and you understand what direction you are heading, together. That compass will information your complete family as you battle life. Another illustration to establish and talk values is as follows:

Make sure to set quality bonding time together. Children would certainly admire and cherish household bonding moments. The household vacation could possibly be your special time together as a family. Apart from getaways, everyday could also be an excellent bonding time. Why not have enjoyable as a family when doing dishes or when joyriding in your automotive? Use your loved ones bonding time as a possibility to hear what is going on about your child.

If punishments are unhealthy, so are rewards. This is how unconditional parenting goes. Rewards might only condition a child?s mind into thinking that he would only be cherished if he does well or behaves likely. Rewarding a toddler could be obviously manipulative.

Family Holidays | Ways to save on the big family getaway ...

May 26, 2011 Expert Guides

With the six week summer break approaching fast, we reveal our savviest tips for great value family holidays?

Don?t leave it too late Holiday discounts are usually based on demand. When demand is low, suppliers are left with empty airline seats and hotel rooms and often reduce them to make sure they?re filled. So, if you?re travelling in low season and you?re not particularly bothered where you end up, you could grab a last minute holiday bargain. Where demand is high, less seats and beds are available, so there are less reasons for tour operators and airlines to offer discounts. This means that late booking during the school holidays doesn?t usually get you the best deal. In fact, as demand increases and availability lessens, prices are more likely to soar. There?s also less likely to be room in the popular family locations and more in 18-30 resorts, for example. If you?re travelling in peak season and know what you want, it makes sense to book as early as you can.

Take to the seas Cruises are much more affordable than you might think ? and offer a wonderful adventure for children. With modern ships boasting facilities like play areas, 3D cinemas and water parks, kids of all ages are kept entertained. Spas, gyms, ice rinks and rock climbing walls mean that grown ups have plenty to do too. Dining is flexible and all meals are included in the cost of most cruises, meaning they?re often surprisingly good value for money.

Build your own Dynamic packages (as they?re known in the industry) often work out much cheaper than their ready-made cousins. By selecting your own flights, accommodation and transfers, you get complete flexibility and choice as well as a better deal. Our website is impartial, with options from an array of airlines and accommodation suppliers. Build your own holiday, just as you want it to be and save money into the bargain.

Self cater Self-catering holidays often end up with most meals being taken in restaurants, which can work out expensive. But with careful planning, these holidays can be fun and affordable. Choose a well-equipped apartment with a furnished balcony or terrace and you can enjoy home-cooked, al fresco meals without leaving your accommodation. Visit local supermarkets for freshly baked bread and produce. It?s a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture and teach children about new food.

All inclusive All inclusive holidays have long been a hit with budget-concious families. Pay one price up front and rest assured that yu?ll need to take virtually no spending money away with you. Food, drink and entertainment are all part of the package. Many large all inclusive complexes are located on the beach and have swimming pools, kids? clubs? and even slides, meaning plenty for children to do.

Away from the Euro Holidays in Turkey and other non-Euro destinations grow more and more popular each year. Choose a location out of the EU and your pound is likely to go a lot further. Think Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Cape Verde, the Caribbean and the USA. Even further afield destinations can work out cheaper than those closer to home when demand is high in the school holidays. Not only will your accommodation be cheaper, but so will your food, spends and shopping.

Book your perfect family holiday online, or call us for friendly, expert advice on 0800 408 4130.

Customers in selected areas of the North East can also take advantage of our school holiday discount scheme, which works in partnership with local authorities, offering a 10% discount off family holidays that are taken completely out of term time. Participating authorities include Sunderland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Durham, Darlington, Stockton, Gateshead, Middlesbrough and Hartlepool..

Memo To GOP: Cutting Medicaid Is Unpopular, Too

David Duprey/AP

Congresswoman-elect Kathy Hochul (D-NY) thanks customers for their support at a restaurant in Depew, N.Y., Wednesday.

Not that there was much doubt left, but Tuesday's uphill victory by Democrat Kathy Hochul in a special election in a New York congressional district long dominated by the GOP has made it pretty clear that the budget blueprint approved by House Republicans last month, which would effectively privatize Medicare, isn't so popular with lots of actual voters.

But with health care still the No. 1 one issue driving the nation's long-term budget problems, advocates for seniors and the poor are worried that would-be budget balancers will set their sites on the vast Medicaid program for the poor instead.

And they've got good reason to be concerned. First, the same House budget blueprint that proposes to transform Medicare would also turn the Medicaid program back to the states and at the same time make huge cuts ? reducing federal funding to states by about a third within the next decade.

?

And while that budget might not be going anywhere fast (it was voted down in the Senate on Wednesday), Republican Senators and members of the House have already introduced legislation that would make it easier for states to cut existing eligibility for Medicaid. That's seen as a bill likely to come up in negotiations on legislation to raise the federal debt ceiling later this summer.

But Republicans who think it might be easier to pick on the poor than politically powerful seniors might want to think again.

This month's health tracking poll from the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation finds that only 13 percent of those polled support major reductions in Medicaid spending as part of congressional efforts to reduce the deficit. At the same time, 60 percent want to keep Medicaid as it is. That means having the federal government guarantee coverage and set minimum standards for benefits and eligibility for every state.

Perhaps even more striking, although maybe it shouldn't be given how much Medicaid has grown in recent years, is that more than half of respondents said they had a personal connection to the Medicaid program. That was defined as the respondent or a friend or family member having received assistance from the program at some point.

Still, Medicaid supporters have their guard up.

"What a lot of people don't understand, is that Medicaid is so critically important for our nation's population," said Ron Pollack of Families USA. "It is the bulwark of our long-term care system. If somebody needs nursing home care or other long-term care, it's Medicaid they go to. And for millions of people in the country, it really is THE safety net."

But the fact remains that Medicaid, particularly with expansions envisioned as part of last year's Affordable Care Act, is projected to grow dramatically, to more than 78 million people by 2019, at an annual cost of $840 billion.

Hayes Carll is a dry-witted folk musician whose humble music is poised, but infused with humorous anecdotes. Hailing from Texas, the singer-songwriter first picked up a guitar at the age of 15. He followed a common route through college while singing on the side, moving around Texas in search of success. But his music is anything but common. He eventually returned to Houston, his hometown, and began to develop a following. That's where he released his first album, 2002's Flowers Liquor, which became an immediate hit with critics and fans alike.

Almost a decade later, Carll has racked up a list of achievements, written three more full-lengths, and spent a good deal of time on the road honing his craft and receiving inspiration. Carll's latest release is KMAG YOYO, a military acronym standing for "Kiss My A** Guys, You're on Your Own."

Medical cannabis and Glaucoma | ArticleEstates.com

Glaucoma is usually a problems in the eye which will at some point result in loss of sight. Of the four billion Americans estimated to have some kind of glaucoma, around half of these are unacquainted with it.

In accordance with the World Health organization, glaucoma is the 2nd leading cause of blindness. Among African Americans, that figure jumps to primary.

Most of the people experienced with glaucoma recognize that seniors are even more so vulnerable to the disorder, but anybody of any age may be affected without warning. Some research signifies that glaucoma can be genetic, but science is still unclear exactly what causes glaucoma to develop.

What?s been discovered is, and various medications, medical cannabis has cut down tremendously the degeneration of vision brought on by glaucoma. Commonly, pressure from the eye has become the reasons behind glaucoma. Medicinal marijuana is helpful on account of a few of its chemicals decreasing intraocular pressure, generally known as IOP, by as much as 25 percent.

Some people state it is an insignificant gain comparing the harmful unwanted effects of marijuana, but that conclusion is nearly biased and without true facts. While cannabis might cause a rapid cardiovascular risk for some older patients, plenty of people report little to no negative effects whatsoever with regular, therapeutic make use of marijuana. This is a far cry on the pages of possible unwanted effects and stories about failures that is included with even the mildest in excess of the counter drugs.

Cannabis isn?t a mysterious cure-all from the treating glaucoma. You will find ? and really should be ? other medications and remedies, including drops that further reduce pressure inside eye by dilation and also other means. Sad to say, several of these methods can lose their effectiveness with time, and also, since there is certainly no known remedy for glaucoma, alternative healthcare means aren?t just preferable, but vital.

Scientists are hard at your workplace planning to make a delivery system for glaucoma patients that will enable them to reap the benefits of growing marijuana without the need to smoke it. To this point, alternative delivery systems for medical cannabis have proven less successful than breathing, as well as ingesting the flower in tiny doses.

In LinkedIn IPO, Hints Of Another Tech Bubble?

Mark Lennihan/AP

LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner, center right with beard, and Reid Hoffman, center background with glasses, listen to traders during their company's listing on May 19 on the New York Stock Exchange. The company reached a market value of $9 billion last week, leading to fears of another dot-com bubble.

When the career-focused social networking site LinkedIn sold shares to the public and managed to more than double its share price and reach a market value of nearly $9 billion last week, many people thought: bubble.

The last time the market showed that kind of enthusiasm for a company with relatively small profits was more than a decade ago. Back in early 2000, the Nasdaq Composite Index was climbing toward 5,000. Investors poured big money into almost any new business plan with a dot-com in its name, and startups spent millions of dollars buying ad time during the Super Bowl. Remember Pets.com's sock puppet?

The heyday ended abruptly in March 2000. Investors pulled their money and retrenched. The focus returned, once again, to profits. And everyone learned their lesson. Or did they?

"We have a lot of echoes of 1999," says Lee Simmons, an industry specialist at Hoover's, a company that tracks IPOs. Simmons isn't ready to declare a bubble, but he also thinks LinkedIn's profits of $15.4 million last year don't make it worth $9 billion. Also, the company faces risks ? most notably that its average user doesn't visit the site very often.

On the other hand, Simmons says the company has been around for eight years, it is profitable and ? regardless ? some people just love bubbles.

"Bubbles are fun, you know?" he says. "They're round, they don't hurt when you run into them, at least initially, and they get bigger and bigger."

Venture capitalists are among those willing to fan the hot air ? especially when it comes to social networking, Simmons says. Speculation is that Facebook, Groupon and Twitter are all considering their own public offerings. It's the first opportunity in a long time ? about a decade ? that early tech investors have a chance to sell the idea that technology is transforming society, and that it can make serious money.

Bubbles are fun, you know? They're round, they don't hurt when you run into them, at least initially, and they get bigger and bigger.

"I guarantee you there is not a single VC backer in this country who isn't thinking about going to market as quickly as possible," Simmons says. "These guys want to start making money again."

Michael Aronson is a venture capitalist who is, indeed, excited about making money again.

Aronson got his chance to sell late last year. Diapers.com, which his firm funded, sold to Amazon for $545 million. He was pleased with that sum until he saw LinkedIn's showing last week.

"Diapers.com was on the path to IPO," Aronson says. "And right now I wish they'd stayed on that path because the valuation would have been significantly higher."

Aronson, who taught at Wharton School of Business during the last tech boom, says there are significant differences between then and now.

Now, companies can do much more without having tons of capital. Web access, computers, servers and other basic infrastructure are much cheaper. Also, startups aren't throwing money at Super Bowl ads like they used to.

Plus, companies such as LinkedIn have been around for a few years ? long enough to have a proven track record and some profits.

"The companies going public now are fairly large companies, with real users, real customers, real revenues, multiple revenue sources," Aronson says.

Anyway, Aronson says, it's wrong to think that just because some of those businesses didn't work in the 1990s, they won't work now. Back then, many people accessed the Web through clunky dial-up connections. Phones didn't come with high-speed data plans, so online shopping wasn't what it is now.

It's funny, Aronson says ? just the other day he reviewed a couple of business plans proposing to sell, of all things, pet food online.

Brooklyn band TV on the Radio are simply one of the biggest acts in rock music today. Combining everything from jazz, soul, hip-hop and electro-pop, the group has carved out a niche entirely its own.

This April, TV on the Radio released Nine Types of Light, its fourth LP and another bold step that defied expectations. Coming off of the funky percussion and new wave synths of Dear Science, the record is downright calm by comparison. Some have called it a lovers' album, full of muted beats and humble melodies.

Shortly following the album's release, bassist Gerard Smith died after a long battle with lung cancer, making the already contemplative Nine Types of Light all the more poignant.

Hear the band perform three songs from the new album, as well as two old favorites, in this edition of World Cafe.

Some Water Ski Precautions Advise For Every Extreme Sports ...

Published: May 25, 2011Posted in: Lake TahoeTags: Sports, water ski, Water Sports

Water skiing may be similar to other forms of sled or ski sports. But there are crucial differences that one must know before engaging in water skiing. The factors that make this sport exciting are the same ones that make it dangerous. Here are some of the tips you need to know before engaging in this exciting water sport. It is important to understand the various water skiing dangers and safety suggestions.

1. Complete Your Team

The most important thing to understand in any water sport is how many people are actually involved. Each team member has a very important role to play in the success of the water skiing adventure.

Besides the rider, the observer and the boat operator are major components of one water ski team. If there are more people on the team, they can act as observers.

There is a reason for this set up. The rider cannot be left unattended while the boat is moving so fast. If an accident should happen, the observer can inform the boat operator to stop. The boat driver also should not be set with the task to watch the rider. Even when the setting is the ocean, there may be buoys that need to be avoided.

2. Good Equipment

Some uncontrollable events that occur in the water may be due to negligence in terms of acquiring the proper equipment. So, your water skiing equipment needs to be in working condition. Technical difficulties should be dealt with at once. Never go without a floatation device like a life jacket.

Ensure that the gear you use is still serviceable. Rider equipment like foot bindings should be perfect. Some boats are also ideal for any water sport because of the kind of wake they create on water. The towline should be checked thoroughly to avoid accidental wipe outs.

3. Master the Hand Signals

During training, the rider, observer and driver will be trained in hand signals. When a boat driver gives the signal, the rider should adjust accordingly. A dry run should be done before the actual run.

Practice makes perfect, after all. A nervous rider can get into accidents more often. Practices should help the rider improve in terms of balance and hand signal use.

I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive - A Novel by Steve Earle

Click on image to buy from Amazon.Com

Steve Earle?s heartbreaking debut novel features a morphine addict who performs illegal abortions, a young Mexican girl with mysterious healing powers, the ghost of Hank Williams, and a host of other more or less charismatic misfits. Set in San Antonio around the time of JFK?s assassination, and told with an equal mix of sympathy and violent detail, the story maintains a delicate balance of many such would-be opposing forces: Catholicism and ?hoodoo,? addiction and redemption, brutal reality and magical realism.

A first novel this compelling from any author would be cause for celebration, but Earle is also a musician (the GRAMMY?-winning albums?Washington Square Serenade and?Townes), actor (The Wire), and activist, and in this context the book is even more of a watershed accomplishment.?I?ll Never Get Out of This World Alive is decidedly not for the faint of art, but adventuresome fiction readers will find much to love in its shocking, tender depths. ?Jason Kirk, Amazon.Com Review

Editorial Reviews

?Earle (a hell of a songwriter himself) has written?a deft, big-spirited novel about sin, faith, redemption, and the family of man.? ?Entertainment Weekly

?Earle draws on the rough-and-tumble tenderness in his music to create?a witty, heartfelt story of hope, forgiveness, and redemption.? ?Booklist

?In this spruce debut novel?hard-core troubadour Earle ponders miracles, morphine and mortality in 1963 San Antonio? With its Charles Portis vibe and the author?s immense cred as a musician and actor, this should have no problem finding the wide audience it deserves.? ?Publishers Weekly

?A thematically ambitious debut novel that draws from the writer?s experience, yet isn?t simply a memoir in the guise of fiction?richly imagined?? ?Kirkus Reviews, starred

?Steve Earle brings to his prose the same?authenticity, poetic spirit and?cinematic energy he projects in his music.?I?ll Never Get Out of This World Alive is like a dream you can?t shake,?offering beauty and remorse,?redemption in spades.???Patti Smith

?. . . a doctor, a Mexican girl, an Irish priest, the ghost of Hank Williams, and JFK the day before he dies. This subtle and dramatic book is the work of a brilliant songwriter who has moved from song to orchestral ballad with astonishing ease.???Michael Ondaatje

?A rich, raw mix of American myth and hard social reality, of faith and doubt, always firmly rooted in a strong sense of character.???Charles Frazier

Review

Steve Earle?s first novel (his first book was the collection of short stories?Doghouse Roses: Stories) is a well-written story that is unmistakably a Steve Earle product. Framed in the weeks before and the months after JFK?s assassination (and in reality written in a time when Earle was struggling to come to terms with his father?s death and needed an outlet, of which the album?I?ll Never Get Out of This World Alive is also a product), ?I?ll Never Get Out of This World Alive? tells the fictional story of Doc Ebersole, a fallen-from-grace MD who now practices medicine (mostly abortions) out of a boarding house in the South Presa Strip of San Antonio and struggles with a twice-daily morphine habit. As Doc was allegedly the last to see Hank Williams alive ten years earlier, Hank?s ghost has the curious and often unhealthy (for Doc) habit of haunting Doc, mainly when he?s high but also just when Hank is lonely, continuously pushing Doc to keep pushing the drug into his veins. One day, however, a young Mexican girl named Graciela is brought to Doc in need of an abortion. The two grow fond of each other during and after her recovery and it soon becomes apparent that all is not what it seems with Graciela as strange miracles begin happening on the South Presa Strip, attracting the attention not only of the local lost souls, but also of the local priest Father Killen. The end result is an explosive climax befitting all the characters involved, from Father Killen to Doc?s dealer and somewhat friend Manny to Doc himself and to Graciela. Even to Hank.

The novel itself is an easy read. At around 250 pages, it is not too long, and the language is written in Earle?s typical ?everyman? diction that he uses in his lyrics and now in his books. The characters are fairly well-written, some better than others (Father Killen seems a little unbelievable at times, even with the efforts to give him a background), but the real meat of the writing is Doc?s addiction, the realism of which is fueled by the knowledge that Earle had his own much-publicized demons in his younger days. It is hard to read the (sometimes unsettling) descriptions of Doc?s drug trips and not feel that Earle has somehow put some of his own experience into the writing. Earle?s fictionalized descriptions of Hank Williams? ghost also weave well into the story, as Doc struggles to balance his obligations to those around him with the ghost that haunts him. The story itself seems familiar and like one that we?ve all heard before, as a sort of twist on the good vs. evil motif. At times it feels a little predictable, but Earle tries to stay one step ahead of the reader to keep you guessing, his skills as a songwriter aiding in his ability to tell a good story. Deftly walking a line between matters of good and evil, addiction, morality, and religion, Steve Earle?s ?I?ll Never Get Out of This World Alive? comes recommended not only to his fans, but also to those who love a good story. ? A tale of sin, grace, and redemption from singer Earle

The Boston Globe Book Review ? May 24, 2011 (Excerpt)

Steve Earle?s debut novel, ?I?ll Never Get Out of This World Alive,?? could become a talking point for critics of graduate programs in creative writing. Earle, one of our better singer-songwriters, never bothered to finish high school. But he put out a surprisingly impressive collection of short fiction, ?Doghouse Roses,?? a decade ago, and has now successfully moved his songwriter?s gift for storytelling onto a still larger canvas.

The novel takes its title, as does a CD of new songs Earle released in last month, from the final single released in the short life of country great Hank Williams. The notes Earle included with the CD suggest he has been pondering mortality lately, as might be expected of a man who has lost his father and gained a newborn son in the past few years. Such thoughts also permeate his novel, which at one level is an allegorical tale of sin, grace, and redemption.

The book opens in late 1963, on a rough side of Earle?s native San Antonio. Its three principal characters? names contain nods to their roles in the allegory: Doc Ebersole, a morphine-addicted abortionist literally haunted by Williams for having provided the shot that killed him 10 years earlier; Graciela, a spiritually attuned young Mexican immigrant whose punk boyfriend brings her pregnant to Doc for treatment and abandons her; and Manny, a good-hearted giant of a pusher. The other lowlifes populating the novel as minor characters have good in them, too, and include a lesbian boardinghouse owner, a fat cop on the take, a tough, brainy barmaid, and a handful of hookers, one of them a cross-dressing former football player. Mark David Ashworth recently performed for WNYC's Spinning on Air.

  • "Silver and Gold"
  • "Keeping Things Whole" (inspired by Mark Strand)
  • "Do It Anyway"
  • "Something We Can Hold in Our Hands"
  • "My Good Friend From Virginia"
  • "Entering the Kingdom" (words by Mary Oliver)
  • "Dirt"
  • "Bright Is the Ring of Words" (words by Robert Louis Stevenson)
  • "Sometimes It Turns Dry and the Leaves Fall Before They Are Beautiful" (words by William Carlos Williams)

Words and music perform an elegant dance of meaning and dreaming in the work of San Francisco's Mark David Ashworth, who explores themes of the natural world, ancient colonization and personal insight. Like most singer-songwriters, Ashworth writes his own lyrics. But he also likes to set pre-existing poems to music.

As Ashworth explains in this interview, he enjoys Franz Schubert's early-19th-century song cycle Winterreise and the Neruda Songs of late contemporary composer Peter Lieberson, but his own setting of poetry has been particularly influenced by musicians most Americans don't know. Ashworth has spent time in Mexico and Peru, and was impressed by the Nueva canci?n tradition of Spanish songwriters Joan Manuel Serrat and Adolfo Celdran, as well as Cuban songwriters Pablo Milan?s and Silvio Rodr?guez.

In his own way, like those Spanish-language songwriters, Ashworth is, as he says here, making "pop songs out of high-class poetry." He has drawn on English-language poets new and old, and in this session performs his settings of poems by Mary Oliver, William Carlos Williams and Robert Louis Stevenson.

The Stevenson setting is "Bright Is the Ring of Words," which also serves as the title of Ashworth's latest album. That record is a rich listening experience, subtly orchestrated with strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. For these performances in WNYC's Manhattan studio, Ashworth brought along just two musicians to perform with him: Taylor Jacobs plays electric guitar and Crystal Fulbright sings. Both are masterful in their supporting roles, greatly enhancing Ashworth's own voice, nylon-string guitar, charango and piano.

I was struck by Ashworth's album, and pleased to bring him into the studio to speak with him about his exploration of words and music. You can watch three videos from his in-studio performance on the Spinning On Air website.

Lots of people give little thought to planning or coming up with special party souvenirs. A nicely planned party giveaway is a fairly sweet and impressive manner of showing appreciation towards your invited guests. It?s going to become more wonderful if you possibly could give a little something you have made yourself for instance cupcakes in various flavors and designs. Cupcakes in cute and elegant looking cupcake boxes are good for party favors and would undoubtedly impress your invitees all the more. Additionally these boxes can still be practical for some other purposes.

If you intend to throw a baby shower celebration, keep in mind that setting up a shower party for the expectant mother really should be given just as much importance and cautious planning whilst you commonly would to some other kind of event or affair. There are a few things which a party host should take into consideration so as to make an event an unforgettable one. Due to the fact having a new addition to the family does not occur every single day, be sure that you put together the best food, drinks, party necessities and favors, as these factors would either make or bust an event.

Because most gatherings have a buffet setting, you may have an amazingly made cake as a centerpiece or maybe you can decide to have a cupcake tower. You may also have the cakes you mean to share with your invited guests inside their boxes and display them all around the cake. Just be sure you choose vibrant colors to make your buffet or cake stand all the more eye-catching. Primarily based on the location in which you intend to throw the party, make certain you have the proper decors. It will be easier if you can think about a concept and color motif. That way, you will have an easier time selecting the colors of the cake, party supplies, decorations and cupcake boxes.

You can attempt visiting websites of cupcake boxes dealers to examine a variety of colours and designs they have. It can also be best to place your requests before specifically if you are intending to have it customized for instance if you have a certain style that you would like to be followed, including the measurement that you need for your cupcakes.
