Rare veteran George Andreas leaves Microsoft, joins Sony

Former Rare game director George Andreas left Microsoft earlier this month to join Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. Andreas, who'd been with British developer Rare since 1996, is working as Creative Director at SCEE's London headquarters.

Andreas was creatively involved with much of Rare's work over the last 16 years, including the likes of GoldenEye, Banjo Kazooie, Perfect Dark Zero, and Viva Pi?ata. After the company was acquired by Microsoft in 2002, Andreas took on lead roles for Xbox 360 games, such as project leader and game director of launch game Kameo: Elements of Power, and creative director on Kinect Sports.

APNewsBreak: EPA moves to ban some rodent poisons

(AP) ? The Environmental Protection Agency is moving to ban the sale of a dozen rat and mouse poisons sold under the popular D-Con brand in an effort to protect children and pets.

The agency said Wednesday it hopes to reduce the thousands of accidental exposures that occur every year from rodent-control products. Children and pets are at risk for exposure because the products typically are placed on floors.

The agency had targeted a handful of companies two years ago, saying they needed to develop new products that are safer for children, pets and wildlife. All but Reckitt Benckiser Inc., manufacturer of D-Con, did so.

The company will have at least 30 days to request a hearing before an administrative law judge. If no hearing is requested, the ban will take effect.

Apple boosts fourth-generation iPad to 128GB for $799

iPad review

Apple's iPad line has topped out at 64GB since it was born. That perennial ceiling has been smashed: the company is hiking the capacity of the fourth-generation iPad to a whopping (and only recently rumored) 128GB. The hardware hasn't otherwise changed and preserves both the performance and dimensions that we already know. The WiFi and cellular versions get equal treatment, although we'll pay dearly for the increase at $799 for the base WiFi version and $929 for the cellular edition. Both of the extra-capacious tablets will be available February 5th.

Apple Increases iPad with Retina Display to 128GB

Offers Twice the Storage Capacity to Create & Enjoy Even More Incredible Content

CUPERTINO, Calif., Jan 29, 2013 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Apple(R) today announced a 128GB* version of the fourth generation iPad(R) with Retina(R) display. The 128GB iPad with Wi-Fi and iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular models provide twice the storage capacity of the 64GB models to hold even more valuable content including photos, documents, projects, presentations, books, movies, TV shows, music and apps.

"With more than 120 million iPads sold, it's clear that customers around the world love their iPads, and everyday they are finding more great reasons to work, learn and play on their iPads rather than their old PCs," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. "With twice the storage capacity and an unparalleled selection of over 300,000 native iPad apps, enterprises, educators and artists have even more reasons to use iPad for all their business and personal needs."

iPad continues to have a significant impact on business with virtually all of the Fortune 500 and over 85 percent of the Global 500 currently deploying or testing iPad. Companies regularly utilizing large amounts of data such as 3D CAD files, X-rays, film edits, music tracks, project blueprints, training videos and service manuals all benefit from having a greater choice of storage options for iPad. The over 10 million iWork(R) users, and customers who rely on other incredible apps like Global Apptitude for analyzing team film and creating digital playbooks, Auria for an incredible 48 track recording system, or AutoCAD for drafting architectural and engineering drawings, also benefit greatly from having the choice of an iPad with more storage capacity.

"Our AutoCAD WS app for iOS was designed to give customers seamless access to their designs anywhere, anytime," said Amy Bunszel, vice president of AutoCAD products for Autodesk. "These files are often large and highly detailed so having the thin and light iPad with its Multitouch display, integrated camera and all-day battery life, is a real advantage for iPad users to view, edit and share their AutoCAD data."

"The features and capabilities of iPad give us the ability to set a new standard for multitrack recording and editing on a mobile device," said Rim Buntinas, WaveMachine Labs' CEO. "Users of the Auria app can play 48 mono or stereo 24bit/96 kHz tracks simultaneously, record up to 24 of those tracks simultaneously, and also edit and mix with familiar tools. With its portability and all-day battery life, iPad has revolutionized recording for audio professionals allowing artists to record anywhere."

"The bottom line for our customers is winning football games, and iPad running our GamePlan solution unquestionably helps players be as prepared as possible," said Randall Fusee, Global Apptitude Co-Founder. "The iPad's unbeatable combination of security, being thin and light, having an incredible Retina display and also being powerful enough to handle large amounts of data enables us to deliver a product that takes film study to a new level and ultimately gives our users the best opportunity to prepare, execute and win."

The fourth generation iPad features a gorgeous 9.7-inch Retina display, Apple-designed A6X chip, FaceTime(R) HD camera, iOS 6.1 and ultrafast wireless performance**. iOS 6.1 includes support for additional LTE networks around the world***, and iTunes Match(SM) subscribers can download individual songs to their iOS devices from iCloud(R).

iPad runs over 800,000 apps available on the App Store(SM), including more than 300,000 apps designed specifically for iPad, from a wide range of categories including books, games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel. iPad also supports the more than 5,000 newspapers and magazines offered in Newsstand, and the more than 1.5 million books available on the iBookstore(SM).

Pricing & Availability

The new 128GB versions of the fourth generation iPad will be available starting Tuesday, February 5, in black or white, for a suggested retail price of $799 (US) for the iPad with Wi-Fi model and $929 (US) for the iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular model. All versions of the 128GB iPad will be sold through the Apple Online Store ( www.apple.com ), Apple retail stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers.

Argentine court upholds freeze on Chevron assets

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) ? An attempt by Chevron Corp. to unfreeze its assets was dismissed Wednesday by an appeals court in Argentina, where the winners of a $19 billion environmental judgment in Ecuador are suing to force the oil company to pay.

Plaintiffs' attorney Pablo Fajardo told The Associated Press that the court refused to lift an embargo that a lower-court judge imposed in November in the case, which involves oil contamination left after Texaco Corp. pulled out of the Amazon decades ago. Chevron later bought Texaco and inherited the problem.

"Chevron respectfully disagrees with the court's decision" and will pursue all available legal remedies to reverse the interim measure, spokesman Kurt Glaubitz said.

Chevron has no assets in Ecuador, so the plaintiffs have filed suits in Canada, Brazil and Argentina.

Chevron has refused to pay, saying that if the accusations had been legitimate, the plaintiffs would be seeking relief in the United States, where the company is headquartered.

Each side has accused the other of committing fraud during the long judicial process, which began in the United States but moved to Ecuador with Chevron's consent at a time when the country was led by interests more sympathetic to foreign oil companies than its current president, leftist Rafael Correa.

CSN: 49ers plan to stay low-key in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS -- There is no French Quarter in Youngstown, Ohio.

And there certainly are no places in Youngstown to get an adult beverage or hot beignets at 3 a.m.

But the 49ers' week-long stay at the site of Super Bowl XLVII is bringing back memories of the road trips the club has taken the past two years during the regular season.

Yes, there will be a lot more media and hype surrounding the 49ers' game Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens, but it is also a time for the team to focus on football -- just as they've done in Youngstown on week-long trips.

"It's a good thing," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. "We've done this really the last two years, stayed in a hotel, had our meetings in a hotel and go to a facility and practice and get ready for a game.

[RELATED: Seifert retires to role as the 49ers' and Jim Harbaugh's biggest fan]

"But it's the same approach as always, really. Enjoy the moment, enjoy preparations. I think that's what our team enjoys the most is the practice, meetings and, especially, the competition."

In 2011, the 49ers played at Cincinnati and had a game the following week in Philadelphia. Harbaugh decided to keep the team in the Youngstown area to avoid back-to-back flights to the east.

On the back end of that trip, the 49ers rallied from a 20-point third-quarter deficit to pull off a 24-23 victory over the Eagles to springboard the 49ers to a 13-3 regular-season record.

The 49ers had similar success this season, as they followed up a loss at Minnesota with a week in Youngstown to prepare to face the New York Jets. The 49ers installed a game plan in which Colin Kaepernick saw his first action at quarterback, and the 49ers rolled to a 34-0 victory over the Jets.

"We'll be out here for a week, so we have to approach it that way," safety Dashon Goldson said. "We'll get accustomed to a new enviroment and practice in a different facility. We'll have to adapt to it. We've been in that situation before."

The 49ers will begin practice later this week at the practice facility of the New Orleans Saints in Metairie, La.

[RELATED: Next stop New Orleans]

Defensive tackle Justin Smith said he does not mind the time away, as the focus is typically on nothing but football.

"Once you get done with today tomorrow, the media day stuff, I think it'll be a regular work week," Smith said. "It's what we'd do normally on the road. We've already done it once with Youngstown. I don't think it'll be that much difference."

The 49ers, who arrived at their team hotel on Sunday evening, have film rooms set up at their hotel. Players can get to the film room early in the morning or late at night without any kind of commute involved.

The goal for Harbaugh and the 49ers is to keep the week as normal as possible. And that's why the experience of Youngstown can be beneficial.

"We'll still have the same body of work that we'd have if we were back home, the same kind of work we had in Youngstown," linebacker Patrick Willis said. "The only difference got to do a whole lot of media.

"And this is not Youngstown."

Look at it in this manner, if you have 1,000 motivated customers on a list that has 5,000 and each individual spends 5 minutes reading the material you send, the accumulated time your customers spend with your ezine is simply over 83 hours or around 3 (24 hour) times. If you send a regular ezine your customers will be likely found by you spending almost half of the season reading your material. To put that in perspective your young ones won?t take school as long as it requires determined clients to collectively read your material. You can do at least ensure it is worth reading if your customers will spend that much time reading your ezine. Samsung SCHi337 appears in UAProf, teases bad pun, 1080p display

Mum's still the word on the arrival of Samsung's next Galaxy S device, but that hasn't stopped fans from speculating. The latest? A user agent profile for an SCH-i337, a Samsung manufactured handset boasting a 1080p display. The UAProf reveals little else about the device, but its lame 1337 naming convention playfully suggests something impressive is coming our way. The Galaxy S IV, perhaps? We're not quite ready to make that call -- but Sammy has to do something with that new Exynos chip, doesn't it? Read on for a peek at the user data yourself, or take a gander at the whole thing at the rightmost source link.

The Death of 'Foodstagram'? Readers React

Click here to view the gallery: Top Comments 01.25.13

One of the biggest stories in social media this week was the report in The New York Times that restaurants in New York City have begun banning customers from taking photos of their food.

[More from Mashable: Facebook, Twitter, Stop Fighting!]

Usually our weekly top comments roundup features discussions pulled from various stories, but this week we were particularly impressed by the ideas and discussions you offered in reaction to this one.

The potential death of "foodstagram" brought on a much larger debate about the etiquette involved in being part of the connected generation. Is it rude to snap a picture of your food at a fancy restaurant? How can restaurants take advantage of these customer interactions? What does the future of food photography look like?

Some of our readers pointed out that using the flash while taking food pictures could take away from fellow diners' experience. Others argued that once they had paid for the food, it was theirs to do with as they pleased. Someone even suggested that getting thrown out for taking a food pic before the bill had been paid was a great way to score a free meal.

We loved the conversation that ensued. What do you think about the idea of a "social table," (similar to smoking rooms at restaurants), or an Instagram menu that features pictures of food? Let us know in the comments below!

Kyocera Torque coming to Sprint's Direct Connect lineup in March, we go hands-on (video)

Kyocera Torque

Going to be in the market for a new Direct Connect device soon, but the current offerings seem so... drab? Enter the Kyocera Torque, the latest Sprint smartphone featuring the network's CDMA-based Push-to-Talk service. The phone, which should be available sometime in early March, brings with it LTE connectivity, (mostly) stock Android 4.0, a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus processor, HD Voice, 4-inch WVGA display, 4GB internal storage and a 2,500mAh battery. As you'd come to expect on a Direct Connect device, it's also certified mil-spec 810G and IP67 and is water-resistant (it can be in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes). It's also the first on this side of the Pacific to utilize Kyocera's Smart Sonic Receiver tissue-conduction tech, a system that foregoes the traditional earpiece and transmits audio to your ear via vibration.

The Torque packs a lot of average features that would likely put it somewhere in the mid-range (we haven't been given pricing yet), but it's definitely not going to win any beauty awards -- it's still a Direct Connect device, after all. Its outer layer is dressed with Dura-Grip and the phone is plenty bulky as a result; however, it's also much more durable than your standard piece of electronics. We threw the phone at the wall, slammed it repeatedly on the table, dunked it in water and even let it sit in ice for at least 20 minutes, all without incident.

On the software side, the Torque uses a version of stock Android 4.0 with only a small amount of tweaking. Essentially, the only major change added in by Sprint and Kyocera is Eco Mode, a power management system on the Torque that blocks background data connections for nonessential apps. We've put together a gallery of pics for you below, and follow us past the break for a full spec listing and our hands-on video.

Kyocera Torque specs:

  • Military spec 810G and IP67-certified
  • IPX5 / IPX7-certified "waterproof" (up to one meter for 30 minutes)
  • 5.54 ounces (157g)
  • 113 x 60.5 x 14.3mm (4.44 x 2.38 x 0.56 inches)
  • Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
  • 1.2GHz dual-core MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 Plus
  • 4-inch WVGA IPS display, Gorilla Glass 2
  • 1GB RAM
  • 4GB internal storage
  • MicroSD (up to 32GB)
  • 2,500mAh battery
  • 5MP rear camera, 1.3MP front-facing
  • NFC, WiFi b/g/n 2.4GHz, Bluetooth 4.0+LE/EDR
  • HD Voice

AZ of better web writing - 4 Syllables

If you want to write better web content, here?s an A-Z that should help. It covers attributes of quality content and issues you should be aware of as a web writer.

A ? Abbreviations

You use abbreviations with care.?Acronyms and other types of abbreviations are convenient if we all know them. They make speaking and writing faster. But if your users aren?t familiar with them, they make reading and understanding slower.

B ? Beginnings

Your beginnings deliver the information your users want.?You structure your?content so it starts with the most important, useful information. And you take the same approach with paragraphs and sentences. You never try to make users read everything. You always put their information needs first.

C ? Conciseness

You write concisely.?You include all the detail a user might need, but you waste no words in doing so.

D ? Direct links

Your links take users directly to the named resource.?You never dump users on the home page of another website and expect them to find their own way. You know their time is limited. ?And you take the time needed to maintain these links.

E ? Egoless

Your content is written to inform, not impress. You always write for your users?not for?yourself or your manager.

F ? Findable

You write accurate and meaningful titles to help people find and recognise your content in search results, social media links, their browser history, tabs and bookmarks. You provide useful meta descriptions. You use file and folder names that are meaningful. You use the right keywords.

G ? Gobbledygook

You never use gobbledygook (or ?weasel words?, as Australian writer Don Watson calls it). You don?t try to sound impressive or hide what?s really going on. You?re clear and direct.

H ? Headings

Your headings break up and label your content. They reveal its structure, using appropriate heading level tags (h1, h2 and so on).

I ? Images

Your images are usable and accessible. They help users understand your content. You don?t rely on colour to convey meaning, but supplement it with labels, patterns or textures. You choose images with strong colour contrast. You avoid images of text. And you include text alternatives.

J ? Jargon and idioms

You avoid jargon and non-literal phrases that may make your content more difficult for some. Instead, you use words and phrases your users will understand.

K ? Keywords

You know the words your users search with. You use them as your topic terms, rather than using internal language.??You don?t overuse them though. You know that keyword density can make your content sound unnatural, and isn?t going to help you get better search rankings. And you?know it?s pointless writing keyword metadata for public search engines.

L ? Link text

You label your links clearly, so users know where a link will lead them. You never use ?click here?, ?read more?, ?this website? or other uninformative labels for links. You also let users know when a link will open a document.

M ? Meta descriptions

Your web pages have meta descriptions that accurately summarise or describe their content. The descriptions are concise?not more than 160 characters?and unique.

N ? Noun strings

You never use noun strings?a series of 3 or more nouns strung together. You rewrite sentences that do.

O ? Optimised images

You always use images that are optimised for the web. You make sure they?re cropped to show the relevant detail, resized to fit the appropriate space on screen, and saved in the right format.

P ? Planned

You always plan before you start writing. You identify your target audiences and consider their information needs. You get all the information you need by talking with your colleagues and anyone who might contribute to, review or approve your content.

Q ? Quality standards and guidelines

Your content meets relevant quality standards. You know your editorial and web style guides well. You?re familiar with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.

R ? Readable

Your content is easy to read. You use short, everyday words. You avoid long sentences. You use the active voice and the present tense whenever possible. You avoid noun strings and nominalised verbs. You use personal pronouns.

S ? Scannable

Your content is easy to scan. You lead with the most important information. Your headings act as signposts, and start with the most informative words. You keep paragraphs short and focused on a single topic. You use dot points where appropriate, keeping each point short. You don?t clutter the page with loads of links. Instead you carefully choose and position the links.

T ? Text alternatives

Your images use an appropriate text alternative. You know when to use a long text alternative and when to use a blank one. You never repeat a caption as the text alternative, but write something shorter instead.

U ? Useful

You publish useful content. You don?t publish content because you have it, or because you can?you always identify a need first. And you check to make sure you?re not duplicating content already on your site. You maintain your content and remove pages no longer useful.

V ? Verbs, not nouns

You use verbs rather than turning them into nouns (nominalisations). You check your drafts to look for common signs of nominalised verbs:

  • Nouns with these endings: -ion, -ing, -al, -ment, -ance or -dom
  • Verbs often used nearby: give, make, undertake, take, achieve, effect, have.

W ? Word and PDF documents

You rarely publish Word or PDF documents online. You only do it when people need to print or redistribute the content. You never do it because because it?s faster or easier for you.

X ? X-channel (cross channel)

Your content always considers where users have come from to reach it. It doesn?t repeat what they?ve already seen. You liaise with your colleagues who handle communications in print or social media, so users are referred to the right page, the relevant information, the next step.

Y ? You and other personal pronouns

You use ??you? and ?your? when referring to your users. And you?re not afraid of using ?we? and ?our? when referring to your organisation.

Z ? Zzz (sleep)

You put some distance between writing your draft and reviewing it. ?You always wait at least overnight, and longer when web publishing deadlines allow.

The eight creepiest teachers who banged their students this week [SLIDESHOW]

Remember Mary Kay LeTourneau? She was the middle school teacher in Des Moines, Washington?who had sex?with her 13-year-old student in 1996. She later?pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree child rape.?It was a huge story. There was a made-for-TV movie starring Penelope Ann Miller.

Well, similar teacher-student sex stories are happening every day, all the time, all over the country. It?s some kind of epidemic, apparently.

The Daily Caller whipped together the slideshow below based on teacher-student sex stories that appeared on respectable national and local news websites this week alone.

There are many businesses out there that know that they can receive the huge benefit from Video Marketing, but are not completely aware of exactly how big of a benefit it could potentially be for their business. Video marketing provides a unique platform that as recently as 15 years ago was not avalable to your average business. Essentially, video marketing allows you to create commercials for your business, and spread them among the users of the various video sharing websites such as YouTube. It is easy to see why this could be a huge benefit to your business, especially if none of your competitors are currently utilizing video marketing to the best of their ability. Some of the benefits that you will find for your business through the use of video marketing include;

Explain Your Products

If you have a complicated product or service, video marketing can provide you with an excellent way to explain your product in depth, and provide potential customers with a better understanding of exactly what it is that you do. Explaining your products, company, and employees to the potential customers that come across your video can be a great way to break the ice, and allow them to become more familiar with your company and exactly what it is that you do. There are a wide range of different video sharing websites available today, each of them providing you with a unique opportunity to connect to different customer bases.

Reach New Customers

You have to look at each video sharing website is a new opportunity to connect with potential customers, and individuals that could be interested in the products or services that you provide. As videos become more consistently utilized online, more people join video sharing websites as a way to research companies, learn about a variety of different subjects, and share their own videos. You do not have to release each video as a commercial for your business, and instead can utilize these videos to spread information that is relevant to your industry and establish your business as a leader and expert within the industry in which you work.

Be More Professional

Also, the fact of the matter is that companies that utilize video marketing heavily simply appear to be more professional to potential customers. Would you rather work with the company that lazily runs a twitter account, or a company that provides insightful and informational videos about the subjects that they deal with, allowing potential customers to learn about their company, and gain insight into the industry completely for free? Also, you can add these videos to your website in order to appear more professional to the potential customers that might stumble upon it. In all, video marketing allows you to explain your products, reach a huge base of new customers, and appear more professional than your competition.

If your business is not utilizing video marketing to the best of their ability, you certainly need to look at all of the available options, and realize the huge profound benefit that it could have for your business.

For Super Bowl ads, it's go viral or go home

4 hrs.

Call them super leaks, super teasers or super previews. But for a growing number of Super Bowl advertisers, they are super smart business.

For years, Super Bowl commercials were closely guarded secrets until they aired on the biggest ratings day of the year. These days, companies have discovered that teasing them online in advance of the big day is a more efficient way of getting their brand message in front of the masses.

CBS, which will broadcast Super Bowl XLVII on?Feb. 3, sold 30-second ad slots for up to $4 million, so it?s no wonder advertisers try to squeeze every drop of value out of their investment.

"We are seeing more teasers because they have been effective," said?Steve Posavac, professor of marketing at Vanderbilt University. "This year, many advertisers feel that if they don?t release a teaser, they will fail to gain consumers? mindshare, and that their ads will be lost in the clutter."

Mercedes-Benz roared out of the starting line first last week, with its spot featuring Kate Upton. Strutting in daisy dukes and a low cut tank top, the striking supermodel blows suds in slow motion at a group of guys as they wash her Benz and ogle her frame, mouths agape.

Though it shows less skin than a standard shampoo commercial -- and seems demure in comparison to?Upton's past backseat turn for Carl's Jr.?last year ? it has already drummed up plenty of buzz. As of Friday night, the teaser racked has up more than 4.6 million YouTube views.

That?s right, more than a week before the San Francisco 49ers face the Baltimore Ravens, Mercedes-Benz?s ad is already a success. And, thanks to the Parents? Television Council, we have the first Super Bowl controversy.

"This ad [reinforces] for millions of wives, daughters and sisters across the country that you use your sex appeal to get what you want," a Parents' Television Council spokesperson told the Daily Mail, complaining that the ad "isn't selling cars, it?s selling sexual objectification."

The sound bite provided global media outlets (ours included) the perfect news hook. In the following days, the ad has been discussed, analyzed, and played over and over again, at no cost to the Mercedes. Talk about return on investment!

The luxury German automaker isn?t the only player in this game. Coca-Cola, Sketchers, Wonderful Pistachios (with 'Gagngam Style' superstar Psy) and MiO (with Tracy Morgan) have released previews.

Coke is also making a huge social media play with its "Mirage" campaign. In it, three quirky character-driven groups -- show girls, badlanders, and cowboys -- race across an African desert to be the first to reach the thirst-quenching Coca-Cola oasis. A preview spot is circulating online encouraging viewers to vote online to determine which group ends up winning in the final spot. Online surfers can either vote by "old-fashioned" online button clicking, or vote-casting with the Twitter hashtags #CokeCowboys, #CokeShowgirls and #CokeBadlanders.

The beverage giant?s advertising company has also cooked up animated gifs, "sabotage videos" and other content ready-made for Tweeting, Tumbling, Instagramming, and Facebooking.?

Indeed,?Coke?has come a long way from Mean Joe Greene?s jersey toss in Coke?s legendary commercial 34 years ago.

The reason for the big social push is simple: More shares equal more views, which equals more brand exposure.

"Without a social media component, a Super Bowl ad is worthless," said?David Johnson, CEO of public relations agency Strategic Vision.

Social has risen and advertisers are rising to meet it.

"Three quarters of the audience will be on a 'second screen' during the Super Bowl,? said Ankarino Lara, chief product officer for Thismoment, which builds branded online content distribution software. "The biggest brands recognize the audience shift and plan mobile and on live elements in their campaigns."

According to data by the Unruly Viral Video Chart, the "Billboard 100 of viral videos," 75 percent of the top 20 most-shared ads from Super Bowl 2012 went up online before game day;? 55 percent of sharing happened after March 1, 2012; and total Super Bowl ads shares increased by 129 percent from 2011 to 2012.

Audi is taking a similar "choose your own adventure" approach as Coke's. On Thursday night, it posted the beginning of its ad, showing a kid driving to his high school prom dateless but in his dad's new 2013 Audi S6 high-performance sports sedan. The German automaker also uploaded three versions of the ending, giving viewers 24 hours to vote on which one will make the final cut.

Other companies are also hopping on the social bandwagon:?

  • Doritos has reprised its annual "Crash the Super Bowl" contest, allowing a fan-made commercial to air during the game.?
  • Lincoln has teamed up with Jimmy Fallon to let fans write the script for its commercial on Twitter with the hashtag #Steerthescript.?
  • Pepsi, Pizza Hut and Toyota will include fan-submitted photos in a commercial.?
  • VW is promoting the #GetHappy hashtag.

Advertisers still have plenty of tricks up their sleeves, though, and some are deliberately taking an "anti-leak" strategy that still has an eye on Twitter impact.

"Some advertisers are holding back ads for a 'surprise' factor and for the instant chatter that will take place on social media during the game," said Katherine Wintsch, founder of The Mom Complex, an Interpublic Group of Companies unit focused on marketing to mothers.

Brands still place a premium on using the Super Bowl as the ultimate stage for product debuts; Anheuser-Busch is going to debut two new drinks at the game: Budweiser Black Crown and Beck's Sapphire.

"I don?t know what it is, but everyone finds humor in dog ads or baby ads," John Yorke, President of creative firm Rain 43, said. "Last year, we saw lots of both ? and the highest rated ads came from these categories ? so if it ain?t broke, don?t fix it ? expect to see more of this trend."?

Visual arts: Thomas Demand's stop-motion animation rocks the boat

?

Pacific Sun is a painstaking piece of animation inspired by video of a storm-tossed cruise ship, by German artist Thomas Demand.

Photograph by: Thomas Demand , VG Bild-Kunst, Bonn/SODRAC

MONTREAL - You can search ?Pacific Sun cruise? on YouTube and watch furniture and people sliding back and forth in a dining room as huge waves roll their cruise ship off the coast of New Zealand.

Or you can visit DHC/ART and watch a stop-motion animation by German artist Thomas Demand of full-sized cardboard furniture rolling across a cardboard room.

Which is more interesting: the YouTube surveillance camera video of true chaos, with people unable to stop themselves from crashing into walls and pillars? Or Demand?s video, which kills much of the event?s drama by removing the passengers and concentrating on the rhythmic back-and-forth of chairs, tables and paper? This video unfolds as a study of the relative inertia of light objects that begin moving before heavy objects, but come to a quicker stop.

My first reaction to Demand?s video was to marvel at the work involved in its making.

Demand said his video, which lasts two minutes, cost as much as a feature film to make. It involved teams of animators moving cardboard props inch by inch, from one marked position to another. A script had to be written to plot the changing positions of each chair, table and sheet of paper.

The answer to the question of which video is more interesting must involve the artist?s intention and his success in conveying it to his viewers.

Pacific Sun is an exercise in ?complexity that borders on madness,? Demand said during a discussion with noted art historian Michael Fried at the PHI Centre on Jan. 17, the night before the opening. The complexity of the video just reflects ?what happens in nature every second,? Demand added.

Fried saw evidence in Pacific Sun, made from a sequence of photographs, of a ?real artist? at work. Demand?s photos and videos show things that seem ordinary, but ?something is off. Everything is fabricated.? The objects, he said, ?declare their ?madeness? and raise the question: What?s going on??

The postmodern realm doesn?t care, declaring it?s up to the viewer to decide, Fried said. ?The artist?s intention is not important.?

But real artists, said Fried, put meaning into an artifact. And everything in a Demand photo or video is determined ? is ?intentional with a vengeance.?

Demand, who started as a sculptor, doesn?t let the viewer choose a vantage point. By photographing ? and then destroying ? his sculptures, the viewing point is determined.

This attitude extends to the entire gallery, making the Thomas Demand: Animations exhibition one huge installation. Pacific Sun is projected into a corner of the gallery, while a video showing a cardboard version of the closed-circuit camera that recorded the original scene is positioned in the opposite corner.

The exhibition is displayed in both of the DHC?s spaces, with the main space devoted mostly to photographs and the satellite space to the videos.

The photographs are unframed but mounted on aluminum, their flatness emphasized by their contrast with patterned wallpaper that simulates curtains ? the theatre?s device for hiding and revealing.

By showing photographs that depict deep space in a flat presentation before a wall that looks three-dimensional, Demand has taken command of the gallery environment, Fried said.

Embassy, an installation of photographs, is not quite typical of Demand?s work, in that the particular event he chose from history is not one of which many people will have even a vague memory. And though it is not always crucial to know the background of an image, knowledge can be a springboard to understanding, Fried said.

With Embassy, a little knowledge is important, and Demand has included an explanatory text. The work takes Demand into investigative journalism, a stance that is becoming more and more common among contemporary artists pondering the world?s many crises.

On the night when 2000 passed into 2001, the Niger Embassy in Rome was burglarized and stationery stolen. A few months later, Italian newspapers were offered what appeared to be contracts ? on paper with Niger?s letterhead ? for the sale of uranium (yellowcake) to Saddam Hussein.

The contracts were obvious frauds, Demand said, since the Niger officials who purportedly signed the documents were long out of office.

Italian newspapers didn?t bite, and European intelligence agencies also knew the contracts were fake, he said. But in 2003, George W. Bush and Tony Blair used them to justify the invasion of Iraq.

Demand said he decided to recreate the embassy that Niger, one of the poorest countries in the world, maintains in Rome, which is also headquarters of the World Food Program.

The embassy consists of four rooms in an apartment building.

He recounted how he gained entrance to the embassy, taking pictures with his cellphone, and how, after leaving, he immediately sketched the scene from memory. Then, posing as a potential renter to confirm the layout of the embassy, he spent a day in a similar set of rooms on another floor.

The result is a set of photographs of cluttered offices, with desks piled with stacks of paper. But these cold and banal architectural images depict a place where something happened that helped launch a war.

Demand?s arduous process of fabricating an image taken from the constant flow of the media stream serves as a way of ?slowing down the unceasing information flux,? exhibition curator John Zeppetelli writes in the exhibition brochure.

By creating a meditative environment, Demand helps us understand that ?these surface effects conceal a churning backstory rife with labour, love and resolve,? Zeppetelli writes.

Thomas Demand: Animations continues until May 12 at DHC/ART, 451 St. Jean St. For more information, visit dhc-art.org.

5 Financial Accounts You Should Check Every Week - Yahoo! Finance

How often do you check your financial statements? The answer should be at least once a week, according to MarketWatch senior consumer reporter Kelli Grant. Checking financial accounts and statements allows consumers to catch fraudulent charges sooner rather than later and the practice helps individuals determine if they?re over budget or exceeding their smartphone data plan. The five most important accounts to examine every week are:

  • credit card
  • cell phone bill
  • online checking account
  • retirement account
  • budget account software (such as Mint.com)

A 2012 study from ACI Payment Systems found that 42% of Americans were victims of credit, debit or prepaid card fraud over the past five years.

Grant says credit card companies offer the best consumer protections against fraudulent charges. Federal law stipulates that consumers are liable to pay up to $50 for fraudulent charges but the majority of credit card issuers will delete suspicious charges if flagged. Banks offer less-friendly consumer policies.

According to Grant, an individual?s liability for spurious credit card charges ranges from $50 to $500 (the fee depends on when the credit card user reports the problem). Consumers are on the hook for all fraudulent charges if no documentation has been filed after 60 days.

Americans may need more protection from their own banking mistakes. A Center for Responsible lending study determined that Americans age 18 to 24 pay nearly $1.3 billion in overdraft fees every year compared to $6.2 billion for individuals aged 55 and older. The typical overdraft is $20, which triggers an average fee of $34, Grant notes.

Monitoring one?s cellphone or smartphone bill online can prevent costly text, talk and data charges. Most wireless carriers will send free text alerts to users if they?re close to hitting their cellular plan ahead of schedule. But it?s very easy to lose track of minutes and texts, Grant says. Verizon Wireless, for example, charges its customers $0.45 for every text message that exceeds the users? monthly plan. Moreover, the company bills users an extra $15 per 1GD of data used if they're over their Share Everything Data 2GB ($60) plan, according to Grant.

Finally, individuals should track their weekly expenditures on budget accounting Web sites like Mint.com to get a complete picture of where and how they?re spending that hard-earned cash. These online sites allow users to review their balances and transactions for all accounts ? credit cards and retirement accounts included ? usually at no extra cost.

Grant says it?s a good idea for consumers to look over their spending habits every few days to see if adjustments need to be made (and to prevent an extravagant shopping spree that may be regretted later).

Don?t ignore the snore: Snoring may be early sign of future health risks

Jan. 24, 2013 ? Here's a wake-up call for snorers: Snoring may put you at a greater risk than those who are overweight, smoke or have high cholesterol to have thickening or abnormalities in the carotid artery, according to researchers at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

The increased thickening in the lining of the two large blood vessels that supply the brain with oxygenated blood is a precursor to atherosclerosis, a hardening of the arteries responsible for many vascular diseases.

"Snoring is more than a bedtime annoyance and it shouldn't be ignored. Patients need to seek treatment in the same way they would if they had sleep apnea, high blood pressure or other risk factors for cardiovascular disease," says lead study author Robert Deeb, M.D., with the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Henry Ford.

"Our study adds to the growing body of evidence suggesting that isolated snoring may not be as benign as first suspected. So instead of kicking your snoring bed partner out of the room or spending sleepless nights elbowing him or her, seek out medical treatment for the snorer."

The study reveals changes in the carotid artery with snorers -- even for those without sleep apnea -- likely due to the trauma and subsequent inflammation caused by the vibrations of snoring.

Study results will be presented January 25 at the 2013 Combined Sections Meeting of the Triological Society in Scottsdale, Ariz. It has been submitted to The Laryngoscope journal for publication.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) -- a sleep disorder that occurs due to the collapse of the airway in the throat during sleep and causes loud snoring and periodic pauses in breathing -- has long been linked to cardiovascular disease, along with a host of other serious health issues.

But the risk for cardiovascular disease may actually begin with snoring, long before it becomes OSA. Until now, there was little evidence in humans to show a similar connection between snoring and cardiovascular risk.

For the Henry Ford study, Dr. Deeb and senior study author Kathleen Yaremchuk, M.D., reviewed data for 913 patients who had been evaluated by the institution's sleep center.

Patients, ages 18-50, who had participated in a diagnostic sleep study between December 2006 and January 2012 were included in the study. None of the participants had sleep apnea.

In all, 54 patients completed the snore outcomes survey regarding their snoring habits, as well as underwent a carotid artery duplex ultrasound to measure the intima-media thickness of the carotid arteries.

Carotid intima-media thickness, a measurement of the thickness of the innermost two layers of the arterial wall, may be used to detect the presence and to track the progression of atherosclerotic disease. Intima-media thickness is the first sign of carotid artery disease.

Compared to non-snorers, snorers were found to have a significantly greater intima-media thickness of the carotid arteries, the study finds.

The study also revealed no statistically significant differences in intima-media thickness for patients with or without some of the traditional risk factors for cardiovascular disease -- smoking, diabetes, hypertension or hypercholesterolemia.

"Snoring is generally regarded as a cosmetic issue by health insurance, requiring significant out-of-pocket expenses by patients. We're hoping to change that thinking so patients can get the early treatment they need, before more serious health issues arise."

The Henry Ford research team plans to conduct another long-term study on this topic, particularly to determine if there's an increased incidence of cardiovascular events in patients who snore.

Along with Drs. Deeb and Yaremchuk, Henry Ford study co-authors are Paul Judge, M.D.; Ed Peterson, Ph.D.; and Judith C. Lin, M.D.

NASA officially joins ESA's 'dark universe' mission

Jan. 24, 2013 ? NASA has joined the European Space Agency's (ESA's) Euclid mission, a space telescope designed to investigate the cosmological mysteries of dark matter and dark energy.

Euclid will launch in 2020 and spend six years mapping the locations and measuring the shapes of as many as 2 billion galaxies spread over more than one-third of the sky. It will study the evolution of our universe, and the dark matter and dark energy that influence its evolution in ways that still are poorly understood.

The telescope will launch to an orbit around the sun-Earth Lagrange point L2. The Lagrange point is a location where the gravitational pull of two large masses, the sun and Earth in this case, precisely equals the force required for a small object, such as the Euclid spacecraft, to maintain a relatively stationary position behind Earth as seen from the sun.

"NASA is very proud to contribute to ESA's mission to understand one of the greatest science mysteries of our time," said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate at the agency's Headquarters in Washington.

NASA and ESA recently signed an agreement outlining NASA's role in the project. NASA will contribute 16 state-of-the-art infrared detectors and four spare detectors for one of two science instruments planned for Euclid.

"ESA's Euclid mission is designed to probe one of the most fundamental questions in modern cosmology, and we welcome NASA's contribution to this important endeavor, the most recent in a long history of cooperation in space science between our two agencies," said Alvaro Gimenez, ESA's Director of Science and Robotic Exploration.

In addition, NASA has nominated three U.S. science teams totaling 40 new members for the Euclid Consortium. This is in addition to 14 U.S. scientists already supporting the mission. The Euclid Consortium is an international body of 1,000 members who will oversee development of the instruments, manage science operations and analyze data.

Euclid will map the dark matter in the universe. Matter as we know it -- the atoms that make up the human body, for example -- is a fraction of the total matter in the universe. The rest, about 85 percent, is dark matter consisting of particles of an unknown type. Dark matter first was postulated in 1932, but still has not been detected directly. It is called dark matter because it does not interact with light. Dark matter interacts with ordinary matter through gravity and binds galaxies together like an invisible glue.

While dark matter pulls matter together, dark energy pushes the universe apart at ever-increasing speeds. In terms of the total mass-energy content of the universe, dark energy dominates. Even less is known about dark energy than dark matter.

Euclid will use two techniques to study the dark universe, both involving precise measurements of galaxies billions of light-years away. The observations will yield the best measurements yet of how the acceleration of the universe has changed over time, providing new clues about the evolution and fate of the cosmos.

Euclid is an ESA mission with science instruments provided by a consortia of European institutes and with important participation from NASA. NASA's Euclid Project Office is based at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. JPL will contribute the infrared flight detectors for the Euclid science instrument. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., will test the infrared flight detectors prior to delivery. Three U.S. science teams will contribute to science planning and data analysis. JPL is managed by for NASA by the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

CHICAGO (AP) ? An American drug dealer who had faced life in prison was sentenced instead to 35 years Thursday for helping plan the deadly 2008 attacks on Mumbai, India ? a punishment prosecutors said reflected his broad cooperation with U.S. investigators but that a victim's family member called "an appalling dishonor."

It was David Coleman Headley's meticulous scouting missions that facilitated the assault by 10 gunmen from a Pakistani-based militant group on multiple targets in Mumbai, including the landmark Taj Mahal Hotel. TV cameras captured much of the three-day rampage often called India's 9/11. More than 160 people, including children, were killed.

Glimpses of the horror came through the teary testimony of one of the victims who described the gory scene as she huddled under a restaurant table with her friends as gunmen sprayed the room with bullets, then walked around executing men, women and children one by one. Her own clothes soaked with blood.

"I know what a bullet can do to every part of the human body," said Linda Ragsdale, a Tennessee children's author, who was shot. "I know the sound of life leaving a 13-year-old child. These are things I never needed to know, never needed to experience."

Headley faced life in prison, and at 52 years old, even a 35-year term could mean he'll never walk free. But federal prosecutors had asked for a more lenient 30 to 35 years, citing his extraordinary cooperation including as the government's star witness at the 2011 trial of a Chicago businessman convicted in a failed attack on a Danish newspaper.

Former U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald spoke in court calling Headley's cooperation within 30 minutes of his 2009 arrest "unusual".

However, Ragsdale and other victims called the 35 years unjust for the severity of the violence.

U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber said he considered the cooperation in imposing his sentence even though "the damage that was done was unfathomable." He cited a letter from Headley who vowed that he was a changed man, but Leinenweber said he didn't buy it.

"I don't have any faith in Mr. Headley when he says he's a changed person and believes in the American way of life," he said.

Headley, who did not address the court, showed no emotion when the sentence was announced. Security was tight at the packed hearing; dogs were walked through the lines of people waiting to get into the courtroom.

Prosecutors say Headley, who was born in the U.S. to a Pakistani father and American mother, was motivated in part by his hatred of India going back to his childhood. He changed his birth name from Daood Gilani in 2006 so he could travel to and from India more easily to do reconnaissance without raising suspicions.

He never pulled a trigger in the attack, but his contribution to the Pakistani-based militant group, Lashkar-e-Taiba, made the assault more deadly. He conducted meticulous scouting missions ? videotaping and mapping targets ? so the attackers who had never been to Mumbai adeptly found their way around.

One woman whose husband and daughter were killed in the attack said a lighter sentence would be "an appalling dishonor" to those killed.

"I feel that for the magnitude of the killings that took place, David Headley has lost his right to live as a free man," said Kia Scherr, who is currently in Mumbai. "This would be a moral outrage that is inexcusable."

Prosecutors also have praised Headley for testifying against Tahawwur Rana, the Chicago businessman convicted of providing aid to Lashkar and backing a failed plot to attack a Danish newspaper for publishing depictions of the Prophet Muhammad. Rana, sentenced last week to 14 years in prison, claimed his friend Headley duped him.

Testifying at Rana's trial in 2011, Headley spoke in a monotone voice, seemingly detached, even as he described one proposal for the never-carried-out Danish plot to behead newspaper staff and throw their heads onto a street.

In video excerpts of his interviews with the FBI after his arrest, Headley appears flippant, cool and calculating.

Prosecutors have recounted only in broad terms how Headley has shed light on the leadership, structure and possible targets of Lashkar-e-Taiba, which was believed to have ties to the Pakistani intelligence agency known as ISI. Headley has said his ISI contact was a "Major Iqbal," who was named in the indictment that charged Headley.

The attackers arrived by boat on Nov. 26, 2008, carrying grenades and automatic weapons, and fanned out to hit multiple targets, crowded train station, a Jewish center and the hotel.

The attack heightened the strain in a historically antagonistic relationship between India and Pakistan, which have fought three major wars. Indian officials accuse Pakistani intelligence of helping to plan the assault ? an allegation Pakistan denies.

For his cooperation and guilty plea, Headley secured both a promise that he would not face the death penalty and would not be extradited to India. Late last year, India secretly hanged the lone gunman who survived the Mumbai attack, Mohammed Ajmal Kasab.

The 12 counts Headley pleaded guilty to included conspiracy to commit murder in India and aiding and abetting in the murder of six Americans, who included Americans Alan Scherr and his 13-year-old daughter, Naomi.

The Scherr family members were in India for a two-week spiritual retreat and were staying at the Oberoi Trident Hotel, one of the sites that came under assault.

After the attack, Scherr helped start an organization called the One Life Alliance, which seeks to work against terrorism by promoting understanding and respect for the sacredness of life.

"This is how I am surviving this event, which erased life as I knew it," she wrote in an email from Mumbai, where she continues to travel to for charity work.
